Volvo’s EX90 is the most important model the company has launched in recent years, aiming to follow the success of the second-generation XC90. As a fully electric, three-row sport utility vehicle, the EX90 represents Volvo’s push into the future of electric mobility. For the 2025 model year, Volvo is offering two powertrain options, both featuring all-wheel-drive systems.
The base Twin Motor variant delivers 402 horsepower to its 20-inch wheels, while the higher-end Twin Motor Performance version packs an impressive 510 horsepower thanks to a more powerful rear motor. Both versions are powered by a 111-kilowatt-hour battery, providing an estimated range of around 300 miles per charge, with an optional 21-inch wheel setup extending the range slightly to 310 miles.
The driving experience is smooth, although some minor torque steer can be felt during acceleration. Volvo has equipped the EX90 with a clutch-based differential that disconnects the rear motor when needed, which improves battery efficiency. The interior of the EX90 reflects Volvo’s dedication to minimalist luxury, with sustainable materials, comfortable seating, and premium finishes like backlit wood trim. However, some features, such as window controls and a touchscreen-driven infotainment system, may require adjustment for those used to traditional setups.
Volvo’s Pilot Assist system is included, though the much-anticipated Level 3 driver assistance capability will only be available through a future software update. Despite this, the EX90 still offers excellent safety features and driving aids, including adaptive cruise control and lane change assist.
Priced at $81,290, the Volvo EX90 enters a highly competitive market, facing stiff competition from rivals like Tesla, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Though it may not revolutionize the brand in the same way as its predecessor, it is a strong contender in the electric vehicle world, with plenty to offer.
