In the impending weeks, a veil of mystery will be lifted as BMW is set to unveil their highly anticipated subsequent edition of the 5 Series and its electric counterpart, the i5. Notably absent from this initial reveal, however, will be the striking M5, a fresh iteration of this high-performance sedan still under wraps and enduring rigorous trials at the famed Nurburgring race circuit, as shown in recent covert footage.
Cloaked under a comprehensive camouflage attire and cladding, the M5 manages to keep its updated aesthetics concealed, intriguingly defying expectations by forgoing the prominent tall kidney grille characteristic of recent BMW models, choosing instead to sport a slimmer version. The front visage remains obscured, with the cladding possibly concealing a forceful, attention-grabbing bumper. Although the video offers scant visibility of the rear-end details, the brand is unable to mask the distinct quad exhaust pipes protruding from the car’s posterior.
Prior secret snapshots have given us a glimpse into the M5’s cockpit, with BMW striving to shield the modifications and reimagined layout. Still, the M5 is anticipated to feature a dual-display dashboard configuration from BMW, clearly discernible in the pictures. The latest iDrive software suite will be embedded in its technology, likely the recently launched iDrive 9, shaping the M5’s digital ecosystem.
The forthcoming M5 signifies a transformative phase for the model, with BMW transitioning it into a formidable hybrid contender. Persistent whispers suggest that this high-octane sedan will share the same powertrain as its SUV sibling, the BMW XM.
However, its performance is not expected to mirror that of the XM, with the latter’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine and solitary electric motor pumping out a potent 644 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque in the SUV’s highest-ranking version. The XM Label Red escalates the power game even further, boasting a staggering 738 hp and 738 lb-ft.
The 5 Series’ next iteration is slated for a grand reveal on May 24, sharing the spotlight with the electric i5, which will hit the market this autumn. In line with BMW’s tradition of delaying the introduction of their performance-focused M series, we anticipate the M5 to follow suit.
US showrooms may have to wait until the following year to welcome the new M5. The grand unveiling could occur before this year wraps up, possibly even showcasing an M5 Touring wagon. However, there have been no sightings of this estate variant undergoing tests in public to date.
