New 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 5-Series

Make way for the rejuvenated BMW 5 Series, internally coded as “G60”. With powertrain choices ranging from conventional gasoline and diesel to advanced plug-in hybrid and fully electric options, this luxury chariot aims to cater to everyone, except, for now, those with a preference for a V8, as the M550i is missing from the roster.

While the exterior remains somewhat evocative of the previous model, it’s the interior where the magic truly unfolds. BMW has redefined its dual-screen system, integrating it with the recently debuted i7 M70 to bring forth the iDrive 8.5 system. This upgrade is geared towards a more streamlined user experience with the QuickSelect feature, consolidating shortcuts on the home screen, thus eliminating the need for digging through submenus. The display sizes, however, stick to the familiar 12.3-inch driver’s display and 14.9-inch touchscreen.

The 5 Series is primed to roll out in the United States with the entry-level 530i. It carries a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine capable of 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft torque, a slight but appreciable enhancement over the previous figures. This four-cylinder engine channels power to the rear wheels and enables the 530i to reach 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. Optionally, investing in the 530i xDrive can trim the acceleration time by a tenth of a second.

Following the 530i is the all-wheel-drive exclusive 540i. Its revamped 3.0-liter, inline-six engine yields an impressive 375 horsepower and 384 lb-ft torque, marking an increase over the predecessor. Additionally, its mild-hybrid technology temporarily boosts the torque to 398 lb-ft, slashing the 0-60 mph time to a scant 4.5 seconds.

For those seeking to embrace the electric revolution, the i5 is available in eDrive40 and M60 variants. The eDrive40, with its single rear-mounted motor, delivers 335 horsepower and 295 lb-ft torque (317 with overboost), clocking 60 mph in 5.7 seconds before topping out at a regulated 120 mph. Conversely, the M60 variant harnesses a dual-motor arrangement, pumping out a hefty 590 horsepower and 549 lb-ft torque (605 with overboost).

The electric M Performance version can bolt from zero to 60 mph in a mere 3.7 seconds and keeps on until electronically tethered at 143 mph. Both of these emission-free 5 Series models share an 84.3 kWh battery pack, allowing the rear-wheel-drive version to cover an estimated 295 miles per charge, and the more powerful all-wheel-drive version to achieve around 256 miles.

Leading the industry, this eighth-generation 5 Series is BMW’s first offering with an entirely vegan interior. Inside, a slid-and-tilt moonroof comes standard but can be swapped out for a panoramic variant, significantly enlarging the viewing area by nearly 90% and nearly covering the entirety of the roof.

The 5 Series is scheduled for global launch in October. The US pricing for the 530i starts at $57,900, followed by the 530i xDrive at $60,200 and the 540i xDrive at $64,900. The i5 eDrive40 and the i5 M60 are priced starting from $66,800 and $84,100, respectively, not including the $995 destination and handling fees. It’s noteworthy that the 540i xDrive will be a slightly late arrival since production doesn’t begin until November. BMW USA has also hinted at the introduction of a plug-in hybrid variant in 2024.
