New 2023 BMW M2 Zandvoort Blue Explained

The impending launch of the 2023 M2 variant has car enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the new powerhouse from BMW. The standard six-speed manual transmission is the preferred choice among stick-shift aficionados, with the eight-speed automatic being only slightly more expensive. The M Driver’s Package unlocks an impressive top speed of 177 mph, a significant increase from the standard 155 mph. For a pure driver’s car, the M2 comes equipped with everything essential as standard equipment.

The BMW S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine powers the 2023 M2, producing an astounding 453 horsepower and 406 pound-ft of torque. This is the same engine found in M3s and M4s, albeit with 20 fewer horsepower. However, the torque output remains the same. All M2s are rear-wheel drive, and buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW claims that this powertrain can launch the M2 from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 3.9 seconds with the eight-speed automatic, while the standard six-speed manual transmission is slightly slower, resulting in a 4.1-second time to reach the same speed metric. These estimates are likely conservative as the previous-generation M2 Competition, which had only 405 horsepower, managed a 3.9-second 60-mph time at the test track.

An M car isn’t complete without a specially tuned suspension and various other chassis enhancements that help make it the quickest version of the 2-series to circle a racetrack.

The EPA has given the M2 fuel economy estimates of 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway when equipped with the six-speed manual. Meanwhile, the eight-speed automatic drops the highway rating to 23 mpg.

The M2’s interior layout is the same as the regular 2-series coupe, with ample passenger space for front-seat riders. However, those relegated to the rear may wish for a 3-series sedan. The front seats feature dramatic bolstering and light-up M logos, giving the cabin a racy feel. Opting for the Carbon Fiber package adds a layer of carbon fiber to various surfaces in the M2’s cabin and replaces the sport seats with even more aggressive ones, which are said to save 24 pounds of weight.

A large digital screen provides the driver with all the data they could possibly need. A 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel is a reconfigurable gauge display that seamlessly transitions to a larger 14.9-inch touchscreen that provides access to the M2’s iDrive 8 infotainment system. Navigation is standard, and a head-up display and 5G connectivity are both optional.

Overall, we are excited to test drive the 2023 M2 and can’t wait to share our driving impressions and test results with you. With its impressive specs and enhancements, we are confident that we won’t be disappointed.
