Mercedes Benz Concept CLA Class Revealed

When contemplating vehicular options, the existence of both internal-combustion and all-electric choices often highlights potential compromises in the electric variant. Yet, Mercedes-Benz is altering this narrative with the Concept CLA-Class. Recently unveiled in Munich at IAA 2023, this concept provides a glimpse into the brand’s novel electric-centric compact car platform.

The Concept CLA-Class derives its foundation from the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA). This framework contributes to its sleek exterior design and sustainable interior materials. The estimated range is an impressive 466 miles on the optimistic WLTP scale. While precise powertrain and battery details remain limited, Mercedes-Benz indicates inspiration from the Vision EQXX concept for its electric motors and expansive Superscreen infotainment system.

The Concept CLA retains a recognizable silhouette, characterized by the “four-door coupe” shape. However, design tweaks, including a lengthened hood and shortened rear deck, infuse sportier proportions. An eye-catching Pomegranate Red coat of paint further sets it apart. The concept also introduces a bolder grille inspired by Mercedes-AMG models, adorned with illuminated stars that lend it a unique appearance.

Echoing the Sensual Purity design language, the Concept CLA exhibits elegant lines and a curved rear end. Design refinements, such as flared fenders and distinctive chrome strips, contribute to a harmonious visual identity. Prominent LED lighting enhances the head- and taillamps, and the interior echoes sustainability with materials like coffee husk-tanned Nappa leather and recycled PET fabric.

Notably, the Concept CLA-Class boasts an expansive Superscreen infotainment system. Comprising three displays, it includes instrument cluster and passenger-oriented touchscreens. Mercedes-Benz’s new operating system, MB.OS, powers this system, featuring a liquid-cooled processor for enhanced performance and graphics.

While the CLA show car’s specifications offer a glimpse of the anticipated production model, they are more estimations than concrete figures. The water-cooled battery and efficiency enhancements underscore its promise. Two battery options, differentiated by chemistry, will be available, while a 800-volt electrical architecture enables rapid charging capabilities.

This concept underscores Mercedes’ forward-looking approach, aligning with the brand’s objective to achieve EV cost parity with internal combustion vehicles. As details unfold, the production CLA’s European debut next year promises to provide more insights into the brand’s electric future. Until then, the Munich concept fuels anticipation and possibilities.
