Honda South Carolina Manufacturing (SCM) in Timmonsville is commemorating a remarkable milestone as it celebrates 25 years of crafting exceptional powersports products. In response to the escalating demand from customers, Honda is expanding the production of its beloved side-by-side models. Since its inception in 1998, the dedicated associates at Honda have crafted an astonishing four million powersports products in the heart of South Carolina.
To mark this momentous occasion, Noriya Kaihara, the President and CEO of American Honda Motor, along with the Chief Officer of Honda North America Regional Operations, joined SCM associates in a week-long celebration. The festivities included a symbolic tree-planting ceremony, signifying the continued growth of SCM within the state of South Carolina, as well as their philanthropic efforts in supporting local community organizations.
Honda’s venture into South Carolina began on July 1, 1998, establishing SCM as the exclusive global production facility for Honda side-by-side vehicles. Recognizing the strong demand for their Pioneer™ series and Talon™ sports models, Honda invested $45 million in 2018 to enhance SCM operations and expand side-by-side production capabilities. Now, in a strategic move to facilitate an even more efficient production process, Honda will be shifting ATV production to Honda North Carolina Manufacturing in Swepsonville, North Carolina.
Over the past 25 years, Honda has continuously adapted its operations in South Carolina to cater to the evolving needs of its loyal powersports customers. The journey commenced with the production of the Honda Foreman 400 ATV in 1998, as a modest $30 million investment manifested into a 200,000 square foot ATV manufacturing plant in Florence County. Subsequent expansions included ATV engine production in 2000 and the addition of Honda Aqua Trax personal watercraft in 2003. Finally, in 2013, SCM proudly initiated the production of the renowned Pioneer™ side-by-sides.
Presently, SCM boasts an impressive production capacity of 100,000 side-by-side models annually, indicative of their unwavering commitment to quality and innovation. The cumulative investment in SCM’s operations has exceeded $450 million, underscoring Honda’s dedication to excellence. Furthermore, this notable achievement has resulted in the employment of approximately 1,000 dedicated associates at the facility.
