Caterham is set to unveil an exciting new sports car called Project V at the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 12. This innovative vehicle, similar in concept to the Seven, which is a roadster inspired by the original Lotus Seven, stands out as a lightweight, rear-wheel drive sports car. However, Project V takes it a step further by embracing full electrification and could potentially hit the market as early as late 2025.
The mastermind behind the design of Project V is none other than Anthony Jannarelly, the newly appointed Chief Designer at Caterham. Right from the start, the vision for this car was to create an electric marvel. Its power is derived from a 200-kilowatt motor located in the rear axle, complemented by a 55-kWh USOC lithium-ion battery pack. With this setup, the car boasts an impressive 268 horsepower and an estimated range of 249 miles. What’s more, it can recharge from 20 to 80 percent in just 15 minutes, thanks to a rapid charger with 150 kW DC capability.
Remaining true to Caterham’s minimalist design philosophy, the Project V sports car embodies simplicity and a focus on lightweight construction. It tips the scales at around 2,623 pounds and features a carbon fiber and aluminum composite chassis. The car’s fully adjustable front and rear double-wishbone suspension, along with electrically assisted power steering, ensure a responsive and enjoyable driving experience. According to Caterham’s estimates, the coupe will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 4.5 seconds and reach an impressive top speed of 143 mph.
As for the interior, the Project V show car introduces a unique seating layout. Initially configured as a 2+1 setup, there is also an optional 2+2 configuration available. Caterham claims that this layout optimizes comfort for rear-seat passengers while enhancing the car’s overall versatility. Moving to the front, the dashboard adopts a refreshingly minimalistic design, featuring two round digital gauges positioned in front of the steering wheel. The center console houses a series of rocker switches that allow the driver to seamlessly switch between Normal, Sport, and Sprint modes, which adjust the car’s acceleration, suspension, and steering characteristics. The infotainment system is both straightforward and user-friendly, offering smartphone mirroring functionality.
All eyes will be on Project V as it takes center stage at the highly anticipated 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where its remarkable features and capabilities will be fully revealed. This all-electric sports car from Caterham promises to offer an exhilarating driving experience while exemplifying the brand’s commitment to simplicity, performance, and innovation.
