2023 Easter Jeep Safari 1978 Cherokee 4xe Concept

As we take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, we find ourselves immersed in this year’s Resto-mod concept build. The Jeep Cherokee (SJ) made its debut in 1974 as a sporty, two-door variant of the Wagoneer. It boasted of bucket seats, a sports steering wheel, and a sleek design aimed at capturing the hearts of younger, more daring drivers.

The next year, the Wide-Track option became available, bringing with it an array of upgraded features, such as exterior stripes, larger tires, 3-inch wider axles, larger front and rear wheel cutouts, Dana 44 front and rear axles, and a more comfortable interior.

Fast forward to the present, and we find ourselves on a journey of concept vehicle love, with a desire to pay homage to the iconic full-size SUV that was the Jeep Cherokee SJ. The Jeep design team set out to reimagine this classic with a modern twist, and thus the Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept was born.

This unique vehicle started as a 1978 Jeep Cherokee, which was lovingly blended with a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe. The aim was to take the performance of the original Jeep Cherokee to new heights, and this has been achieved through the use of a modern powertrain.

The original body underwent significant modification, resulting in an exterior that blends original proportions with a vivid, unmistakably 1970s-themed multicolor paint scheme. While the ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept may appear similar to a vintage Jeep Cherokee SJ at first glance, it has been transformed into a modern, electrified, off-road performer.

Under the hood, the ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept features the advanced Jeep Wrangler 4xe powertrain, providing a one-of-a-kind on- and off-road experience through the combination of two electric motors, a high-voltage battery pack, and a high-tech 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine. The power is transmitted to 37-inch tires wrapped around custom 17-inch “slotted mag” style wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission mated to a 4:1 transfer case, providing more than enough power to tackle any terrain.

The custom interior of the Jeep ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept boasts low-back bucket seats trimmed in luxurious leather. The rear bench seat was replaced with a four-point safety cage, and the rear cargo space houses a full-size spare tire just in case the trail gets a little too wild.

In conclusion, the Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept is a unique blend of vintage and modern design that has been achieved through meticulous attention to detail. It embodies the spirit of the original Jeep Cherokee SJ while incorporating cutting-edge technology to provide an exceptional on- and off-road experience. This vehicle is a testament to the ingenuity of the Jeep design team and is sure to capture the hearts of both classic car enthusiasts and modern off-road adventurers alike.
