2024 Volvo XC60 Safety and Crash Test

The 2023-24 Volvo XC60 and the plug-in hybrid XC60 Recharge, which are both midsize luxury SUVs, have received the prestigious TOP SAFETY PICK awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

To nab the TOP SAFETY PICK distinction in 2023, a vehicle needs to achieve excellent scores in various safety tests. These include the driver-side small overlap front test, the passenger-side small overlap front test, and the original moderate overlap front test. Additionally, the vehicle must earn an acceptable or good rating in the updated side test. It’s also essential that the vehicle is equipped with headlights that have an acceptable or good rating across all trim levels. Moreover, a front crash prevention system must be available, which earns either an advanced or superior rating in the daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation.

Now, if a vehicle aims for the even higher-tier TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, it must secure a good rating in the updated side test. Furthermore, the vehicle needs to showcase advanced or superior performance in both the daytime and nighttime pedestrian tests.

The good news is that both Volvo models meet these rigorous safety standards. They come with standard front crash prevention systems that have earned superior ratings in the daytime evaluation and advanced ratings in the nighttime test. Plus, all trims of these vehicles are equipped with LED reflector headlights that have received an acceptable rating.

However, it’s worth noting that even though these vehicles meet many of the criteria for TOP SAFETY PICK+, they fall short in one aspect. They do not secure acceptable ratings in the updated side test, which prevents them from qualifying for the “plus” designation.
