2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro vs Ford Ranger Raptor vs Chevy Colorado ZR2

In the mid-size off-road truck segment, the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, and Ford Ranger Raptor are competing for top position. The 2024 models present improvements across the board with all three as crew-cab trucks featuring a short bed.

The Colorado ZR2 carries a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four engine, producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. This has proved to be reliable in off-road conditions.

Meanwhile, the Ranger Raptor is powered by a 3.0-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6, providing a class-leading 405 horsepower, with torque equivalent to the ZR2’s. The 10-speed automatic transmission is a feature, but eight gears may be more beneficial for certain scenarios.

The Tacoma TRD Pro’s power comes from a hybrid system – the iForce Max – comprising a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four and an electric motor-generator, which together deliver 326 horsepower and a class-leading 465 lb-ft of torque. The combined output is managed through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Tacoma’s hybrid powertrain is likely to offer the best fuel economy and is also equipped with a 2400-watt onboard AC power inverter. Each truck features wide-track suspensions, 33-inch tires, and have skid plates for protection.

On the specifics of suspension setups, the ZR2 employs Multimatic DSSV shuttle-valve dampers, while the Raptor and TRD Pro both use Fox 2.5-inch dampers. The TRD Pro also boasts a three-inch broader stance and manually adjustable compression damping, contributing to potential better off-road performance.

Regarding off-road capabilities, each truck features part-time four-wheel drive and multiple off-road drive modes. The ZR2 offers the highest ground clearance at 10.7 inches, while the TRD Pro stands out with a front anti-roll-bar disconnect feature.

Towing capacities for the ZR2 and TRD Pro are both 6000 pounds, while the Raptor is rated at 5510 pounds. The payload capacity is highest for the TRD Pro at 1709 pounds, compared to 1411 pounds for the Raptor and 1151 pounds for the ZR2.

Interior space varies, with the Raptor appearing to offer the most legroom. All three trucks come equipped with large touchscreens, wireless phone mirroring, and assorted infotainment features. The TRD Pro features unique shock-absorbing isometric front seats.

As of now, the ZR2 is available at $48,295. The Ranger Raptor will be available later in summer at a higher price of $58,555. Pricing for the TRD Pro is yet to be announced, but it’s expected to undercut the Raptor and surpass the outgoing model’s $49,890 price tag. The TRD Pro will be available in spring 2024.
