Mitsubishi’s latest offering, the all-new Triton, has finally been unveiled after an exceptionally long teaser campaign. Known as the L200 in certain markets, this midsize pickup is now in its sixth generation and brings with it a fresh and revamped appearance both inside and out. One of the significant changes lies in the utilization of a newly developed ladder frame that enhances its overall performance. Additionally, the Triton comes in three body styles – double cab, club cab, and single cab – all of which benefit from a remarkable 60 percent increase in torsional rigidity.
To achieve a lighter body compared to its predecessor, Mitsubishi has opted for a new high-tensile steel material. The truck also features a redesigned carbo bed, which has been lowered by 45 millimeters (1.77 inches) to 820 mm (32.2 in) for easier cargo handling. To boost practicality further, a reinforced frame and an added step in the bumper corner have been incorporated. As a result, the vehicle is now larger overall, but clever engineering using lighter steel has helped minimize any significant weight gains.
Depending on the chosen configuration, the new Triton offers two four-wheel-drive systems – the Super Select 4WD-II and the Easy Select 4WD. The former is more advanced, equipped with a center limited-slip differential that distributes 40 percent of the power to the front wheels and the remaining 60 percent to the rear wheels. The driver can select from various modes to adapt to different terrains: 2H (Rear-Wheel Drive), 4H (4×4), 4HLc (4×4 with a locked center differential), and 4LLc (low-range with locked center differential). Additionally, seven driving modes, namely Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock, provide even more versatility.
The suspension system of the Triton has also undergone a complete revamp. It now sports a new double-wishbone front and a lighter leaf spring setup at the rear. For models equipped with the Super Select 4WD-II system, Mitsubishi has added Active Yaw Control (AYC) to improve cornering by gently applying the brakes to the inside front wheel. Moreover, hill descent and hill start assist systems have been included to provide additional support for off-road adventures.
The focus on the Triton’s performance extends to the engine as well. Mitsubishi has introduced a new diesel engine, a 2.4-liter mill available in three different power outputs: 148 horsepower (110 kilowatts) with 330 Newton-meters (243 pound-feet) of torque, 181 hp (135 kW) with 430 Nm (316 lb-ft) of torque, and the most powerful configuration with 201 hp (150 kW) and 470 Nm (346 lb-ft) of torque. Depending on the chosen engine, it can be paired with either a six-speed automatic transmission or a shift-by-wire manual with the same number of gears.
In terms of aesthetics, the 2024 Triton offers a variety of color options, with the striking Yamabuki Orange Metallic paint job being a standout choice. Other available colors include Blade Silver Metallic, White Diamond, Solid White, Jet Black Mica, and Graphite Gray Metallic. The top-tier versions feature a body-colored front grille with certain parts of the body finished in dark titanium. Some of the images displayed also showcase a rally-spec model, designed to participate in the Asia Cross Country Rally.
Inside the cabin, Mitsubishi has put in considerable effort to bring the Triton up-to-date. Although it may come as a surprise, the dashboard still features analog dials, which are easy to read and provide a classic touch. The climate settings have separate controls, and there are convenient shortcuts positioned beneath the touchscreen. The dashboard layout is functional and straightforward, which is perfectly suited for a workhorse vehicle like the Triton. The selector for switching between 2WD and 4WD is conveniently placed between the seats, alongside a button for selecting driving modes.
Already available in Thailand, the new L200/Triton will gradually make its way to ASEAN and Oceania markets before hitting Japanese showrooms in early 2024, marking its return after 12 years. Mitsubishi has made substantial improvements in terms of design, performance, and features, making the Triton a compelling option in the fiercely competitive midsize pickup segment. With its enhanced capabilities and refreshed appearance, the 2024 Triton is set to make a significant impact in the automotive market.
