2024 Corvette Stingray, E Ray, and Z06 MPG Explained

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently rolled out the fuel economy figures for the 2024 model year Corvette. What’s got folks talking is the Stingray, which sips its dino-juice a bit more efficiently than before, boasting an extra mile per gallon. On the flip side, the combined fuel efficiency number remains stuck at a steady 19 miles per gallon.

Now, let’s talk about the Stingray’s powertrain. It’s the same V8 engine that you’ll find under the hood of the first-ever Corvette with a hybrid twist, known as the E-Ray. This new hybrid machine, unveiled in January 2023 for the 2024 model year, also clocks in at 19 miles per gallon in the EPA’s combined testing.

But here’s the twist in the plot: the E-Ray isn’t quite as fuel-friendly on the highway. While the 2024 Stingray hits 25 mpg in those conditions, the E-Ray falls just short, rolling in at 24 mpg. The reason? Well, the hybrid system brings along some extra weight, and that tends to put a little more strain on the gas mileage.

Now, if you’re interested in the E-Ray’s electric capabilities, it boasts a range of three to four miles on pure electricity. But keep in mind that the E-Ray is also a bit of a heavyweight, tipping the scales at 260 pounds more than the regular Stingray. Its hefty high-voltage battery sits right between the seats in the center tunnel, but that’s standard for all C8 Corvettes.

Now, let’s switch gears a bit and talk about the Z06. The EPA classifies it in two different flavors: Z06 and Z07. The Z07 package is for folks who want to add some aerodynamic bits for extra downforce. Going for the Z07 setup means you’ll be giving up a mile per gallon compared to the standard Z06, which gets you 15 miles per gallon.

But what makes the Z06 truly special is its engine. It’s a high-revving beast, inspired by endurance racing and the V8 engine you’d find in the mid-engine Ferraris. General Motors crafted a flat-plane crankshaft V8 for this bad boy, known as the LT6. This 5.5-liter powerhouse is the biggest flat-plane crank V8 ever plonked into a production car.

Now, if you’re itching to get behind the wheel of a Z06, be ready to shell out some bucks. At the time of writing, the starting price sits at $108,100, not including delivery charges, which add another $1,695 to the bill. And depending on which aero bits you pick, you might also have to pay the gas-guzzler tax, which ranges from $2,600 for the standard Z06 to $3,000 for the Z07.

When it comes to sheer power, the Z06 trumps the Stingray. However, in terms of torque, it’s slightly behind. It’s only a hair faster in terms of top speed, reaching 195 miles per hour or 188 mph for the Z07. But if you’re all about that straight-line speed, the E-Ray is your ticket. It’s the quickest Corvette to hit 60 mph and conquer the quarter mile.

GM claims it can do the 0-60 sprint in just 2.5 seconds and cover the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds. That’s pretty wild, especially when you consider the price tag of $102,900. To put things in perspective, the C7-generation ZR1 needed 2.85 seconds for the 0-60 dash and 10.6 seconds for the quarter mile.
