2023 Toyota Hilux GR Sport Available in Australia

Toyota has recently launched a groundbreaking innovation in terms of design and performance for Australia’s top-selling vehicle, the HiLux GR Sport, which introduces an off-road-focused sports truck fitted with a wider range of features such as more power, wider tracks, tuned suspension, and more extensive disc brakes.

This novel variant in the HiLux range, designed with Dakar-inspired toughness and intuitive handling, coupled with powerful driving performance, is a result of GAZOO Racing’s prowess in motorsport. Toyota’s team of engineers in Australia, which is globally recognized as a center of excellence for Toyota 4WD vehicles, played a pivotal role in the development program, utilizing their proficiency and expertise in combination with their counterparts in Thailand, Japan, and Latin America.

The new model, which is a hardcore off-roader, is the most powerful diesel HiLux to date in Australia, featuring a 2.8-litre engine with power and torque boosted by 10 percent to 165 kW and 550 Nm, thanks to revised turbo-supercharging and fuel-injection control. With sportier tuning for the automatic transmission and an expanded lock-up area, the HiLux GR Sport provides added confidence for accelerating and overtaking in all conditions, enhancing optimal control through paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

To cater to the most demanding driving conditions, the new platform is equipped with wider tracks, with the front extended by 140mm and the rear by 155mm, coupled with redesigned wishbones and a reinforced rear axle. The set-up is further improved with dedicated monotube shock absorbers with higher damping force and heat-dissipation capacity, stiffer coil springs, and an optimal front-rear suspension balance that delivers exceptional handling, increasing stability through reduced roll angle, and providing precise steering response. Furthermore, the set-up offers the driver an opportunity to experience the adrenaline of a sporty vehicle without sacrificing ride comfort for everyday use.

The HiLux GR Sport is available exclusively in the double-cab body style, and its wider stance is the fundamental feature of the Dakar-inspired design, giving a strong, stable, and muscular image with prominent satin-black over-fenders that seamlessly integrate into the bumper. Front styling directly references the vehicle’s rally motorsport roots, enhancing the vehicle’s “go-anywhere” capabilities with an increased approach angle and higher ground clearance.

The exterior features a robust, upright grille, designed to maximize the cooling area, drawing attention to the signature GR grille mesh and TOYOTA lettering. Exterior body parts have been sculpted in the wind tunnel to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The new model rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, while its off-road credentials are further reinforced by the addition of a skid plate, rock rails, and red rear recovery points.

In the interior, the monochromatic black theme is accentuated with bright sports pedals and red seatbelts. GR branding is featured inside and out, including on the steering wheel, headrests, red brake calipers, exterior badges, and even embossed into the tub-liner.

Sean Hanley, the Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia, stated that the HiLux GR Sport will strengthen the unbreakable bond Australians have with HiLux. With its exceptional performance and design features, this groundbreaking model is poised to take Australia’s automotive industry to new heights.
