2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback European Spec

Toyota has recently introduced the new Corolla, which is the latest addition to their 12th generation range of cars, and continues Toyota’s pursuit of innovation and their commitment to developing superior vehicles. As one of the top-selling cars in Europe’s C-segment for compact/mid-size models, the new Corolla is now further bolstered by the fifth-generation hybrid electric technology from Toyota. This advanced technology comprises 1.8 and 2.0-litre powertrains that are electrified and offer more power and an enhanced driving experience, all while being more efficient.

The 1.8-litre system delivers a total of 138bhp, which brings about a 1.8-second reduction in the 0-62mph time, taking it down to 9.1 seconds. The 2.0-litre system, on the other hand, offers a total output of 193bhp, which is half a second faster than the 1.8-litre system, taking the 0-62mph time down to 7.4 seconds.

As for CO2 emissions, they start from 100g/km for the 1.8-litre system and 98g/km for the 2.0-litre system. In terms of fuel economy, the Icon Hatchback with 16-inch wheels offers 64.2mpg (all figures based on the WLTP combined cycle).

To enhance the efficiency of the fifth-generation hybrid electric system, Toyota has introduced lighter and more compact components that maintain the reliability of their technology. Additionally, the use of low-viscosity oil reduces internal friction, further improving the overall efficiency of the car. Toyota has also made improvements to other components such as the gears, which now have teeth that are reprofiled to provide a larger contact area, and a smaller, lighter differential.

One of the most significant improvements in the new Corolla is the introduction of a new lithium-ion hybrid battery that is smaller and lighter than previous models, yet has a higher output, contributing to the car’s dynamic performance and fuel efficiency. Compared to the battery used in the previous system, the new battery is 14% lighter and has a 14% increase in power output. Toyota has optimized the cooling path of the battery to help preserve its life by preventing deterioration caused by temperature fluctuations. Also, the battery unit is located beneath the rear seats, allowing for unobstructed use of the car’s load space.
