2023 Opel Astra Electric With 247 Mile Range

The most recent iteration of the Opel Astra has made a groundbreaking leap into the realm of fully electric vehicles, following in the footsteps of its smaller counterpart, the Corsa. Opel has unveiled a set of initial specifications and the first images of the new Astra Electric, which will be available in both hatchback and Sports Tourer wagon variants.

At first glance, the Astra Electric bears a striking resemblance to its internal combustion engine-powered or plug-in hybrid siblings. However, upon closer inspection, we notice a couple of notable distinctions: a discreet “e” emblem adorning the trunk door and a set of EV-specific 18-inch alloy wheels, available in either diamond-cut or completely black finishes.

Not surprisingly, the Opel Astra Electric and Astra Sports Tourer Electric share the same all-electric powertrain as the Peugeot e-308, which was unveiled in September. The front-mounted electric motor boasts a power rating of 115 kW (equivalent to 154 horsepower) and generates 270 Newton-meters (equivalent to 199 pound-feet) of torque, surpassing the Peugeot’s output by 10 Nm (7 lb-ft). This robust motor propels the front wheels and enables a top speed of 170 km/h (105 mph).

Fueling the motor is a 54-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, comprising 102 cells grouped into 17 modules. With a usable capacity of 51 kWh, this compact battery pack grants the Astra Electric an impressive driving range of up to 416 kilometers (approximately 258 miles) based on the WLTP standard.

Opel rates the Astra Electric’s energy efficiency at 12.7 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers (62 miles) or 14.9 kWh per 100 km according to WLTP. When it comes to recharging, the battery can be replenished up to 80 percent capacity in about 30 minutes at a fast-charging station with a direct current power source of 100 kW. Additionally, the Astra Electric comes standard with a three-phase 11 kW onboard charger for convenient at-home charging using a wall box.

Turning our attention to the interior, the Opel Astra Electric offers a range of features designed to enhance comfort and convenience. Noteworthy amenities include ergonomic Active Sport seats, which are optionally available in Alcantara upholstery, as well as a fully digital Pure Panel setup equipped with two large 10-inch widescreen displays. The cabin also boasts an E-HUD head-up display, natural voice recognition, and other advanced technologies.

Safety is a paramount concern, and the compact EV is equipped with an array of assistance systems. These include front collision warning with automatic emergency braking, active lane keep assist, drowsiness detection, and rear cross-traffic alert, all bundled together in the new Intelli-Drive 2.0 system.

Starting in spring 2023, customers in Europe will have the opportunity to place orders for the Opel Astra Electric and Astra Sports Tourer Electric. These electric vehicles mark a significant step toward sustainable transportation and showcase Opel’s commitment to the electrification of their lineup.
