Honda Outlines Next Steps Towards Carbon Neutrality in Europe

Honda recently held a media event at its European research and development facility in Offenbach, Germany, where the company outlined its plans for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Senior Honda stakeholders provided more details on the multi-pathway approach that will be adopted, including the introduction of new products and services in the region.

One of the key highlights is the launch of three new SUVs: the all-electric e:Ny1, the hybrid ZR-V, and the CR-V, which will feature a plug-in hybrid variant. Additionally, Honda will introduce its first electric-powered two-wheeler, the EM1e:, specifically designed for the European market. The company will also expand its energy management service, e:PROGRESS, to provide a comprehensive range of solutions.

With the entire Honda automobile range already electrified, following the release of the latest hybrid Civic model last year, the event showcased the brand’s commitment and ambition in the field of electric mobility as it enters the next phase of development in Europe.

Katsuhisa Okuda, President and Director of Honda Motor Europe, emphasized the importance of Europe to their business and expressed their dedication to expanding their automobile products and technologies. Okuda also highlighted their focus on energy services, which lays the foundation for future electrification and contributes to global sustainability targets.

As a global leader in mobility solutions for the past 75 years, Honda believes that deploying a range of technologies and products is the best approach to reducing global CO2 levels and facilitating the transition to a sustainable future.

Honda’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the all-new ZR-V and CR-V models, which offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains respectively. In addition, the brand’s second full EV offering in Europe, the e:Ny1, boasts a remarkable zero-emission range of 412 kilometers. This diverse lineup of automobiles represents Honda’s widest range of options in Europe in recent years.

Furthermore, Honda announced the upcoming release of the EM1 e:, an electric moped designed for the European market. This new model aims to provide a sustainable mode of transportation, particularly suited for younger and urban riders. It is one of the many electric vehicle models Honda plans to introduce globally by 2025.

Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe, expressed satisfaction with Honda’s achievement of full electrification of their automobile range in Europe through the launch of the new Civic. He emphasized the brand’s commitment to sustainability by introducing the three new SUVs, the second EV, and the first electric moped. Gardner also recognized the significant role Europe plays in Honda’s global transition.

Honda’s electrification efforts extend beyond their product lineup. The company is investing in the development of clean energy services, including research on hydrogen as a clean energy carrier and the implementation of charging and storage solutions to maximize efficiency and sustainability. One notable project is e:PROGRESS, a cost-effective and sustainable at-home charging solution already available in the UK. It will also be accessible to owners of the new e:Ny1, plug-in CR-V, and Honda e. Future plans involve expanding the service across Europe and extending it to owners of non-Honda vehicles. Moreover, Honda aims to integrate solar energy into the charging ecosystem in the second phase of the rollout.

Takehiro Wada, President of Honda R&D Europe, highlighted the company’s belief in mobility and energy as a service. He described the energy research program as a platform to offer smart and sustainable solutions to society and customers. By reducing the strain on domestic energy infrastructure, these initiatives not only benefit the environment but also provide cost savings to customers. Wada emphasized the broad capabilities of Honda as a full-service electric mobility company.
