2023 Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid GR Sport

Toyota has recently introduced the Yaris Cross GR Sport grade as the latest addition to its line-up of city SUVs. This new model grade is the fourth one to be released in Australia and is priced at $35,840 plus on-road costs, making it $3850 more expensive than the Yaris Cross GXL 2WD hybrid, but $2150 cheaper than the flagship Yaris Cross Urban AWD Hybrid.

GR, which stands for Gazoo Racing, is Toyota’s performance sub-brand, and the Yaris Cross GR Sport is the third model to join the GR Sport branded range, which also includes the C-HR small SUV and LandCruiser 300 Series four-wheel-drive. Unlike fully-fledged Toyota GR cars such as the GR Supra and GR Yaris, the GR Sport models mostly have cosmetic changes and minor mechanical upgrades.

The Yaris Cross GR Sport is equipped with new features in addition to the GXL’s standard ones, including a black mesh grille, restyled lower rear bumper with a rear diffuser, 18-inch twin five-spoke alloy wheels, red brake calipers with GR logos, black mirror caps, and GR badging. The interior has also been upgraded with new sports seats, an updated steering wheel, GR logos on the headrests, steering wheel, and smart keys, aluminium pedals, and a grey shift knob, instrument panel, and inner door trim.

Moreover, the Yaris Cross GR Sport also comes with an additional USB-C port alongside the standard USB-A outlet, as well as a Panasonic-developed air purification system marketed as ‘nanoe X air ionization.’ According to Toyota, this new model has benefited from several suspension tweaks, resulting in a ride that is 10mm lower than the existing model grades. Additionally, the new variant features an underfloor brace and a second brace between the crossmembers.

Toyota has stated that the Yaris Cross GR Sport has a combined 85kW power output from a 67kW/120Nm, 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors. It is also equipped with a continuously-variable automatic transmission and claims to achieve a fuel consumption rate of 3.8 liters per 100km in mixed driving. The Yaris Cross GR Sport is available in five exterior colors: Frosted White, Stunning Silver, Ink, Atomic Rush, and Lunar Blue. The range has also been updated to include Frosted White, which has replaced Crystal Pearl.
