2023 Honda Civic Type R Engine and Drivetrain Explained

The Civic Type R, already renowned for its exceptional ride, handling, and steering, has undergone extensive development and testing to further improve its performance. The engineers conducted tests in Japan, North America, and Europe, including the demanding Nurburgring in Germany, to make the Type R more responsive, comfortable, and thrilling to drive.

Under the hood, the Type R boasts an even more powerful K20C1 engine, thanks to a redesigned turbocharger, increased air intake flow rate, and a new, more efficient exhaust system. The turbocharger has been optimized for maximum efficiency and generates pressure more efficiently, enabling the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine to produce 315 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. This results in one of the most powerful cars in its class per liter, with a specific output of 157.8 hp/liter.

To ensure optimal performance during extreme driving, the engine cooling system has been improved with a larger grille opening, bigger radiator, and a new large-diameter fan. The active exhaust valve also opens at higher RPMs to enhance the engine’s sound, further strengthening the driver’s connection with the car.

The six-speed manual transmission has also been improved for a more intimate and rewarding driving experience. The lighter flywheel and revised rev-match system allow for perfectly paired rev-matching during gear changes, while the high-strength gearbox has a high-rigidity lever and optimized shift gate pattern for a hyper-precise gear change. The Type R also features a standard helical-type limited-slip differential to effectively put the engine’s power to the pavement.

Built on the all-new 11th-generation Civic Hatchback, the Type R boasts a significantly more rigid body structure that supports both improved dynamics and refinement. The wheelbase has been extended by 1.4 inches for a smoother ride and greater stability, and the front and rear tracks are wider for improved straight-line stability and steering feel. The Type R also features two-piece front brake rotors for exceptional braking performance, improved brake cooling, and a retuned brake booster for improved feel and controllability.

Drivers can switch between four pre-set performance settings, including Comfort, Sport, and R+ Mode, as well as a new “Individual Model” mode that allows customization of the driving experience.
