2023 BMW M2 in Brooklyn Grey Exhaust Sound

BMW has recently incorporated nearly all of the M4’s major components, along with the mechanically identical M3 sedan’s parts, into the M2. This includes the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine. Despite the estimated curb weight of the new car increasing significantly to approximately 3800 pounds, the S58 mill from BMW produces a robust 453 horsepower in this specific application. This is 20 horsepower less than the standard M4, but 48 more than the previous generation M2 Competition’s S55 inline-six, which provided an even stronger dosage than the limited-edition 444-hp M2 CS.

As for the transmission, the M2 still has a six-speed manual as standard, with the option of an eight-speed automatic sourced from ZF in place of the previous seven-speed dual-clutch unit. The EPA has given both options a combined fuel efficiency rating of 19 mpg, which is roughly equivalent to the previous-gen M2 Competition. Interestingly, the EPA has stated that the manual gearbox option will travel one additional mile per gallon on the highway, providing added incentives to select the DIY gearbox. However, we have yet to test the automatic transmission option.
