Toyota Retro Cruiser Gets V8 Engine and Coming to SEMA 2023

The Toyota Land Cruiser, with a heritage spanning over seven decades, holds an iconic status worldwide as the ultimate go-anywhere, do-anything SUV. As the 2024 model year marks its triumphant return to North America, Toyota proudly unveils a true legend: the Rod Millen Group’s 1967 FJ45 Land Cruiser Wagon, known as The Retro Cruiser.

This remarkable vehicle, displayed at SEMA from October 31st to November 3rd, is not a mere show car concept. Conceived in 1999 during a visionary conversation between Toyota’s senior managers and racing legend Rod Millen, The Retro Cruiser blends cutting-edge Land Cruiser technology with a deep respect for its rich heritage.

Starting as a $5,000 project, the team extended the frame by 10 inches and revamped the body for a more muscular look, incorporating significant performance enhancements. Notably, its suspension system stands out. While preserving production Land Cruiser components, they engineered an independent rear suspension with coil-over spring/shock assemblies for improved ride comfort. The front track was widened by 4 inches, resulting in a 30% increase in wheel travel. A narrowed stock differential, custom uprights, and original brakes and hubs allowed for 12 inches of rear-wheel travel. Custom 17-inch billet wheels fitted with rugged 35-inch General Tire Grabbers ensure capable off-road performance, while custom skid plates add protection.

Under the hood, The Retro Cruiser boasts a power boost from a 230-horsepower 4.7L V-8 engine, accompanied by a custom-designed Borla stainless steel exhaust for an aggressive note.

Despite its rugged exterior, the interior exudes luxury, featuring contemporary Land Cruiser components upgraded with Connolly leather. It includes a satellite phone, navigation system, and a 15-gallon onboard water supply for extended adventures. The vehicle’s structural rigidity is enhanced by a complete interior roll cage.

To prepare for SEMA, Toyota’s team meticulously restored the FJ45, addressing mechanical issues, replacing worn components, and restoring the exterior to its original glory.

The Retro Cruiser, one of Toyota’s 19 featured vehicles at SEMA under the theme “Track or Trail, Your Thrill Awaits,” showcases the brand’s commitment to delivering exciting on-and-off-road performance vehicles, making this year’s show Toyota’s largest SEMA presence yet.
