Preview of Toyota’s FT Se Electric Sports Car Concept Unveiled

Toyota is giving us a sneak peek at an upcoming sports car set to make its debut at the Japan Mobility Show later this month. The initial teasers reveal a coupe with a futuristic design that stands in stark contrast to the current GR86 and Supra models available for purchase. This new car seems to be an evolution of the Sports EV concept seen earlier, which had a similar shape, an orange body, and a black roof. It looks like it might be a step closer to production.

The electric sports coupe bears the name “FT-Se” and proudly displays Gazoo Racing badges both inside and outside the vehicle. In fact, the Toyota logo is absent from the rear, replaced instead by a black and red “GR” badge in white lettering. This distinctive branding is also present on the unique yoke-shaped steering wheel and the front fender.

While Toyota hasn’t officially explained the significance of these letters, we can draw some conclusions based on their past nomenclature. “FT” has typically stood for “Future Toyota,” and if we recall, the 2014 FT-1 eventually became the 2020 Supra. It’s reasonable to assume that “S” signifies “sport,” while “e” represents electric.

Beyond its emissions-free powertrain and fresh exterior design, the FT-Se boasts an entirely new interior, distinct from the GR86 and Supra. The digital instrument cluster sits above the steering wheel, flanked by an infotainment screen on the right and another display on the left. Toyota has even mentioned the addition of new knee supports to enhance driver comfort and protect against G-forces during spirited driving.

It remains uncertain whether Toyota intends to bring a production version of this sports car to market in the future. However, there is some optimism in the air, as the company’s chairman, Akio Toyoda, recently hinted at plans to resurrect the Celica. Furthermore, rumors persist about a potential revival of the MR2.

More information is expected to emerge during the press days of the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, which is scheduled for October 25 or 26. Stay tuned for updates on this intriguing new addition to Toyota’s lineup.
