Porsche Vision 357 A look back at the conceptual journey to the future

Porsche, the renowned sports car brand, celebrates a significant milestone as it embarks on its 75th anniversary. To mark this occasion, they introduce the Porsche Vision 357, a design study that pays homage to the dream of Ferry Porsche, the visionary behind the sports car revolution. This remarkable concept car showcases the potential of Porsche’s future design philosophy, combining tradition and innovation in a captivating manner.

The Porsche Vision 357 is built on the technology platform of the impressive 500 PS 718 Cayman GT4 RS, ensuring outstanding sports car performance. Its exterior design is a true highlight, grabbing attention at the special exhibition titled “75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars” in Berlin’s Volkswagen Group’s “DRIVE” Forum. Visitors can experience the Porsche Vision 357 firsthand as the exhibition opens to the public from January 27th, 2023, until mid-February. Moreover, this design study will be presented at various international events throughout the year, including the highly anticipated South by Southwest in Austin.

Embracing Porsche’s rich heritage, the Vision 357 boasts a monolithic form reminiscent of the iconic 356. Its narrow passenger cell, sharply wrapped windscreen, and broad shoulders pay tribute to the timeless lines of the classic sports car. Pushing the boundaries of glass production, Porsche challenges tradition with a visually striking design element—the black A-pillars merging seamlessly with the side window surfaces, resembling a helmet’s visor.

The Porsche Vision 357 seamlessly blends functional details with its sculptural character. Cleverly concealed door openers and tail lights integrated into the body’s patterned array of points exemplify the attention to detail. The rear grille pattern, incorporating the third brake light, harkens back to the original 356. The design study also features a four-point light signature at the front, paying homage to current Porsche models. Round headlights reminiscent of the 356’s characteristic lights further accentuate the design’s heritage-inspired elements.

The Porsche Vision 357 leaves a lasting impression with its wide track, exuding both strength and driving stability. Its 20-inch magnesium wheels, equipped with aerodynamically advantageous carbon fiber hubcaps and central locks, recall a legendary Porsche wheel design. Racing-inspired details, such as improved wheel arch ventilation and a jointless front bonnet fastened with quick-release mechanisms, further emphasize its performance-oriented nature.

Highlighting their commitment to sustainable materials, Porsche incorporates natural fiber-reinforced plastic (NFRP) derived from flax fibers in the design study’s side sills. Departing from conventional exterior mirrors, cameras mounted on the roof’s edge provide a modern touch. The visible tailpipe trim, crafted from blueish-looking titanium, and the ceramic interior of the tailpipe add a touch of elegance to the rear.

Under the hood, the Porsche Vision 357 features a naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine capable of theoretical power output of 368 kW (500 PS) from its four-liter displacement. Designed for operation with e-fuels, this concept car aligns performance with sustainability.

As Porsche celebrates its 75th anniversary, the Porsche Vision 357 stands as a testament to their commitment to pushing boundaries and imagining the future of sports car design. With its captivating aesthetics and fusion of tradition and innovation, this design study exemplifies Porsche’s unwavering pursuit of automotive excellence.
