Porsche 911 GT3 R Rennsport Walkaround

Rennsport Reunion 7 is currently happening in sunny California, and it’s Porsche’s big celebration of its impressive racing history. Among all the thrilling happenings, Porsche has introduced an extraordinary car – the Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport. This machine, however, stands out from the usual street-legal and GT3 competition cars we’re used to seeing.

First, let’s talk about the name. Porsche calls it the 911 GT3 R rennsport, with a lowercase ‘R’ – quite different from its bold and capital-lettered presence. Underneath its eye-catching, oversized rear wing, which needs extra support to handle its substantial downforce, there’s a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter flat-six engine. They borrowed this powerhouse from the GT3 race car, and it pumps out an impressive 611 horsepower. What’s interesting is that it’s not confined by GT3-class rules, so it has more freedom. The engine gets special tuning to run on E25 fuel and boasts unique pistons and camshafts. With a higher compression ratio, it’s bound to make quite a noise as it revs to a staggering 9,400 RPM.

As you can see in the pictures, the GT3 R rennsport is set to make a statement from miles away. Porsche decided to skip many of the usual panels and covers in favor of a weight-saving approach, leaving much of the mechanical bits visible. This includes the exhaust system, which can be set up for full noise or equipped with mufflers and catalytic converters to meet track noise rules. Power goes only to the rear wheels through the six-speed sequential gearbox, a modified version of the GT3 R’s transmission.

Now, let’s look at the wheels. The GT3 R rennsport comes with special 18-inch rims from BBS, wrapped in Michelin tires made just for this exceptional machine. The chassis and suspension setup are taken right from the racing GT3, but Porsche has customized it for the rennsport at the factory.

But what really catches your eye is the bodywork. Porsche says that only the hood and roof are the same as the GT3 R. The front end, inspired by the racetrack, offers a unique look with redesigned vents, panels, and fins. Instead of regular side mirrors, the rennsport uses cameras that show the view on a dedicated cockpit display. The rear wing design is inspired by the iconic 935/77, making it clear that the 911 GT3 R rennsport is a spiritual successor to the 935.

Porsche has big plans for this amazing creation, seeing it as not just a high-performance marvel but also a collector’s dream. To suit different tastes, Porsche offers seven distinct color options and three exterior designs for potential buyers.

But if you want to get your hands on one of these limited-edition 911s for your collection, you’ll need to act fast and be ready to spend quite a bit. Porsche is only making 77 units of the GT3 R rennsport, and prices start at a hefty $1,046,000.
