New 2024 Range Rover Sport SV Using A BMW M Engine From X5 M

There’s an exciting development in the automotive world: the emergence of a new Range Rover Sport SV that is now equipped with a BMW engine. But this isn’t your typical BMW engine; it’s a remarkable 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with mild-hybrid assistance, delivering an astounding 626 horsepower and up to 590 lb-ft of torque when launch control is engaged. You might be wondering, why is this such a significant development? Well, it’s not just any BMW engine; it’s an M engine, specifically the S68, and what’s even more intriguing is that it hasn’t been detuned for use in a competing brand’s vehicle. In fact, it boasts more power than the BMW X5 M Competition, which offers 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.

Now, while the Range Rover Sport SV is undoubtedly poised to be an exceptional vehicle, I find myself even more thrilled about the broader implications this decision has for a completely different brand and car. Specifically, Toyota and its acclaimed GR Supra stand to benefit tremendously from this collaboration.

It’s worth noting that BMW’s practice of supplying engines to other manufacturers is not a new phenomenon. In the past, BMW has supplied engines to Land Rover when it still owned the brand, and it has also entered into engine supply agreements with independent manufacturers. One such example is Wiesmann, a manufacturer of exquisitely crafted vintage-inspired sports cars that utilizes BMW motors in its exceptional creations.

Initially, it was widely assumed that BMW would provide the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport with their standard N- and B-code engines. This was indeed the case initially, as both SUVs were equipped with the N63 V8 engine.

However, one would naturally assume that BMW would reserve their top-tier S-badged M motors for their own premium offerings and not supply them to a competing automaker. After all, it seems counterintuitive to share proprietary technology with a potential rival who could leverage it to develop a competing product.

Nevertheless, BMW has defied expectations and broken this rule, and the ramifications of this decision are monumental.
