Infiniti offered a glimpse into its future design trajectory during the Monterey Car Week event. This unveiling showcased the QX Monograph, a full-sized SUV with a striking aesthetic. The QX Monograph’s design journey commences at its frontal visage. Here, a grille inclined forward captures attention, bedecked with diagonal bars resembling chevrons, elegantly pointing skyward towards the brand’s fresh, three-dimensional “infinite road” emblem. Perched prominently atop the SUV’s prow, this grille is flanked by contemporary, low-mounted headlights nestled within bumper corner vents. Progressing along the forefront of the hood, including the grille’s zenith, resides a sequence of “piano key” daytime running lights. These lights orchestrate an engaging animation, drawing inspiration from the graceful motion of a bird taking flight – a nod from nature itself.
The piano keys find themselves reprising their role at the SUV’s rear, where an LED bar spanning the width makes its presence felt beneath the backlight. A closer examination discloses the stout light components, which ingeniously comprise diminutive horizontal light strips, evoking memories of a synthwave-inspired sunset portrayal. Echoing a motif from the new QX60, the Monograph dons a floating roof, accentuated by a beveled embellishment coursing alongside the rear quarter window.
Distinct echoes of modern Infiniti aesthetics can be discerned within the narrowed lighting elements and the double-arch grille, forging a tangible connection. However, the QX Monograph endeavors to carve a more angular trajectory. Although the vehicle’s exterior expanse might appear subtly adorned, nuanced character lines weave their tale. Notably, the hood boasts a pronounced central ridge, while an inclined surface traces the beltline, continuing the visual narrative initiated by the hood’s clamshell. The front fender hosts a utilitarian vent sporting a mesh pattern, inspired by the longitudinal texture of bamboo, ingeniously knitting the vehicle with its Japanese heritage.
The subtleties of these surface accents acquire heightened visibility under varying illuminations. Infiniti selected a warm silver hue christened “Akane” for the vehicle’s exterior finish. This six-layer paint application draws inspiration from the kaleidoscopic transitions of a sunset. Consequently, the concept materializes in hues ranging from blush pink to ethereal light purple, and at times, even assuming a bluish-gray tint, contingent upon the play of light. The twilight-inspired motif further unfurls through red accents adorning the wheel spokes and the prominent “Monograph” badging.
While the QX Monograph undeniably shares considerable proportions and a squared-off roofline with its QX80 predecessor, its design ethos resonates as decisively contemporary and harmonious. Naturally, elevating the QX80, which could be perceived as somewhat dated, to align with the cutting-edge standards set by the Cadillac Escalade and the stylishly modern Lincoln Navigator, demands more than mere aesthetics. Hence, one can only hope that Infiniti has reserved a technologically advanced powerplant and a cabin of impressive comfort to underpin its flagship SUV. As for the anticipated appearance of the novel QX80 within showroom precincts, historical precedence suggests that Infiniti’s Monograph concepts prelude their production counterparts by approximately a year. Thus, a glimpse of the new QX80 is slated for the 2025 model year.
