Ford Mustang Dark Horse Based GT3 Race Car Unveiled

The world-renowned Ford Mustang GT3, widely recognized as a remarkable sports car, is set to participate in the highly prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race in June 2024, showcasing its exceptional performance and capabilities.

The introduction of the Mustang GT3 race car, derived from the all-new 2024 Mustang Dark Horse, took place during the centenary celebration preceding the commencement of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Esteemed motorsports designer Troy Lee, known for his remarkable talent, has crafted a vibrant and eye-catching appearance for the Mustang race car. This endeavor marks Lee’s initial venture into the realm of Ford race cars.

With this unveiling, Ford formally enters the global FIA GT3 category, demonstrating its commitment to competitive racing on an international scale. Ford’s most recent triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans occurred in 2016 with the Ford GT, further enhancing the brand’s reputation and heritage in endurance racing.

Concurrently, Ford is also introducing a fresh, global Ford Performance branding concept, featuring a more streamlined and simplified design that will be adopted across all its racing vehicles. This new, expressive identity aims to position Ford Performance as a distinctive lifestyle brand with a strong sporting ethos. The updated Ford Performance emblem is easily adaptable to various contexts, including car liveries, merchandise and apparel, display materials, parts and accessories, as well as advertising platforms.

To realize this project, Ford Performance has extended its collaboration with two longstanding partners: Multimatic and M-Sport. Multimatic, renowned for their work on the iconic Ford GT, has previously been involved in the Ford GT race program and will contribute to the assembly and support of the Mustang GT3s. Meanwhile, M-Sport, a highly accomplished team with two World Rally Championship titles under their belt, will be responsible for assembling the powerful new pony’s 5.4-liter Coyote-based V8 engines, which have been developed by Ford Performance.

The Mustang GT3 race car showcases several notable features, including a custom-designed short-long arm suspension, a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox, lightweight carbon fiber body panels, and an aerodynamic package specifically tailored to meet the requirements of the GT3 category.

Moreover, the Mustang GT3 will embark on a global journey, competing in various GT3 series around the world under the patronage of customer teams, before ultimately arriving at Le Mans in 2024.

The inaugural customer team to embrace the Mustang GT3 is Proton Competition, a German-based outfit located in Ehingen. Proton Competition intends to field a duo of Mustang GT3s in the FIA World Endurance Championship, commencing from the year 2024. This collaboration marks a significant milestone as the first-ever customer team in the World Endurance Championship to align with the Mustang GT3, further highlighting the car’s allure and desirability among racing enthusiasts.
