Electric Toyota HiLux Concept Revealed

Toyota Australia has achieved a significant milestone on its journey toward reducing tailpipe emissions to zero. This achievement comes in the form of the company’s first fully electric battery-powered HiLux prototype, which has been made available for evaluation by local engineers and selected industry partners.

The vehicle evaluation team, well-known for their expertise, had the privilege of conducting confirmation drives with this unique technology showcase. In addition to the internal team, several prominent HiLux customers and valued clients were invited to test the vehicle and provide their valuable feedback.

Toyota Motor Corporation’s decision to bring this groundbreaking concept to Australia was the result of close collaboration with their counterparts in Toyota Thailand. The HiLux BEV, designed as a mobile proving ground, is part of Toyota’s global initiative to electrify their commercial vehicles.

The Australian confirmation program, although compressed, has been successfully concluded. The vehicle has now returned to Thailand, where the local Toyota distributor will assemble a demonstration fleet of HiLux-based electric share taxis for the domestic market.

Sean Hanley, Vice President Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia, expressed optimism about the potential for a city-focused HiLux BEV based on the concept vehicle. He emphasized that Toyota’s expertise in developing battery-electric vehicles surpasses common perceptions.

The HiLux Revo BEV Concept program strengthens the bond between Toyota’s Thai and Australian divisions. This partnership was instrumental in the recent launch of the HiLux GR Sport.

For the past seven years, the HiLux has held the title of Australia’s best-selling vehicle, with over 64,000 sales in the previous year alone. It is even more popular in Thailand, where demand exceeded 145,000 vehicles in 2022.

Thailand has established itself as a global production hub for utility vehicles, earning it the title of the “ute capital” of the automotive world. It plays a pivotal role in manufacturing HiLux and other workhorse vehicles for various carmakers worldwide.
