Electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Simulated Engine Sound and Shifting

In this latest sneak peek, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, an electrifying, high-performance crossover can be seen cruising through Seoul’s bustling streets and tearing up the racetrack.

Hyundai gives us a tantalizing glimpse into the “virtual shift mode” that was alluded to earlier. By squeezing both paddles behind the wheel, drivers can experience a faux gear-shifting sensation. Albert Biermann, Executive Technical Advisor, had previously hinted at replicating the exhilarating jolt and downshift vibrations of the i30 N, outfitted with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

As for the sounds that accompany the action, they’re courtesy of the N Sound Plus system, designed to emulate the throaty growl of a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) sports car. At one point, we’re even treated to some pops and bangs. Perhaps the most authentic auditory experience comes when the driver downshifts, and the virtual revs soar. Of course, this is all synthetic. Hyundai has indicated that forthcoming over-the-air updates will provide owners the option to upload their own customized artificial noises.
