Classic Lamborghini icons to celebrate 60 years of history

Automobili Lamborghini recently played host to the illustrious “Giro Polo Storico,” a captivating event that beckoned international Lamborghini aficionados, steering them on a remarkable journey from September 14th through 17th, traversing the picturesque terrains of northern Italy’s distinctive regions. This extraordinary undertaking, an integral part of the commemorations marking the brand’s grand 60th anniversary, witnessed the convergence of Lamborghinis, representing diverse countries and spanning every generational epoch up to the dawn of the third millennium. The guardians of Lamborghini’s storied legacy, the venerable Lamborghini Polo Storico division, orchestrated this symphony of nostalgia and preservation, meticulously tending to the hallowed archives, production documents, and the resurrection of Lamborghinis, including the venerable Diablo 6.0 SE series, bestowing them with authenticity and vitality.

The cavalcade of classic Lamborghinis was graced by the presence of several automotive luminaries, among them the venerable 350 GT, bearing the distinction of being the second offspring of Lamborghini’s production line—an automotive relic now beautifully rejuvenated and pulsating with life.

Reflecting on these evocative days beneath the Lamborghini banner, Federico Foschini, the Chief Marketing and Sales Officer, effused, “It was truly exhilarating to immerse ourselves in the Lamborghini experience. In this pivotal year for our esteemed company, we relished the opportunity to pay homage to the iconic cars that have indelibly etched our history. We cherish our heritage even as we steadfastly chart our course towards a dynamic future.”

Nestled upon the Spiaggia Degli Ulivi, a sublime intersection of beauty and technology, a remarkable tribute to Lamborghini’s heritage loomed large—an impeccable replica of the fabled ‘Jota.’ This exceptional marvel, meticulously resurrected over thirteen years by a devoted English enthusiast from the remains of a Miura, faithfully adheres to the original specifications, a mechanical resurrection engineered with the mastery of Bob Wallace, the iconic test driver hailing from Sant’Agata. The procession then journeyed onward to the Terre Scaligere, concluding the day with an enthralling sojourn in Verona.

The subsequent leg of their odyssey led the Lamborghini caravan to Valpolicella, a land adorned with undulating vineyards. As they crossed the historic Visconteo bridge in Valeggio sul Mincio (VR), a pause ensued, permitting an exploration of the resplendent Villa Sigurtà. Among the esteemed automobiles stood the venerable Countach LP 400 S, which once served as the pace car during the 39th Formula 1 Grand Prix of Monte Carlo. This automotive luminary, which also graced this year’s Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance after traversing the Atlantic from the United States, bore witness to the iconic Grand Prix on May 31, 1981, when it adorned a formidable flashing light atop its roof, emblazoned with the word ‘intervention.’ It perpetuated Ferruccio Lamborghini’s tradition of unveiling his masterpieces in the Monaco GP setting, following in the formidable tire tracks of the Miura, Countach, and the irreplaceable Marzal.

Their sojourn continued with a warm welcome in Guastalla (RE) at the splendid Villa Malaspina Guarienti, a stunning embodiment of neoclassical architecture with roots tracing back to the early 11th century. The estate’s repute is further enhanced by its English-style park. The spectacle was heightened by the presence of the Diablo VT, pressed into service as a ‘demonstration pace car’ during the 1996 PPG Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) Indy Car World Series races. An exceedingly rare honor, shared by only two Diablo VTs in history, one resplendent in black and the other in gold. Both were fortified with roll-bars and the Jota kit, elevating their maximum power output to a formidable 600 hp, complemented by a dedicated air intake gracing the bonnet and a front bumper adorned with two conspicuous tow hooks.

On a climactic Saturday, the esteemed guests converged in Modena, finding solace within the embrace of the Parco Giardino Ducale Estense. Here, they partook in a sumptuous gala dinner, rubbing shoulders with Lamborghini’s luminaries. The grand crescendo unfolded at the historical Sant’Agata Bolognese headquarters, where former stalwarts, who had once toiled during the halcyon days of Lamborghini’s classic models, regaled the assembly with anecdotes from their storied careers dedicated to the brand.

In summation, the “Giro Polo Storico” unfurled as a tapestry woven with the threads of Lamborghini’s rich heritage, encapsulating the brand’s enduring legacy and relentless pursuit of automotive excellence. This symphony of classic Lamborghinis, swathed in bursts of nostalgia, showcased the indomitable spirit that continues to propel the marque into an exciting future.
