Volvo has unveiled its latest addition to the electric vehicle lineup, the all-electric EX30, and it’s making waves in the automotive industry. As the brand’s smallest SUV and electric vehicle to date, the EX30 offers a city-friendly and affordable alternative to its larger siblings, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge electric SUVs. This premium subcompact SUV marks Volvo’s fourth all-electric model and promises to deliver an impressive driving experience.
Priced at $34,950 in the US and approximately 36,000 euros in Europe, the EX30 aims to be on par with conventional internal combustion engine-powered SUVs of similar size. Volvo’s pricing strategy ensures that customers can enjoy the benefits of electric mobility without compromising their budget.
The EX30 shares the naming scheme with its larger counterpart, the EX90, as the “EX” prefix indicates that both models are solely available as fully electric vehicles. Embracing a similar design philosophy, the EX30 showcases elements reminiscent of the EX90. Notable design features include the closed shield grille, Thor’s Hammer headlights digitally recreated, split taillights arranged in a similar fashion, and a dashboard layout that bears some resemblance.
However, it’s important to note that the EX30 is not a mere copy of the EX90. Its profile boasts an ascending waistline that culminates in a thick C-pillar, creating an optical illusion of a “floating roof.” Additionally, the EX30’s bonnet exhibits a more dramatic plunge towards the nose, while its muscular wheel arches are significantly more pronounced compared to the EX90.
Stepping inside the EX30, occupants are greeted by a minimalist Scandinavian interior design infused with cutting-edge technology. The centerpiece of the dashboard is a 12.3-inch single-screen infotainment system, while a soundbar stretches across the upper section below the windshield—a unique feature in the automotive world.
Volvo has collaborated closely with tech partners like Google, Apple, and Qualcomm to ensure an exceptional user experience. Through their joint venture with ECARX, called HaleyTek software, the automaker aims to provide customers with the best possible infotainment platform. Moreover, the EX30 will receive software updates wirelessly, further enhancing its functionality and keeping it up to date.
From a technological standpoint, the EX30 boasts several noteworthy features.
Volvo understands the importance of customization, allowing customers to choose from four distinct interior themes and five ambient lighting themes. Each combination is paired with an ambient soundscape, enabling drivers to tailor their driving environment according to their preferences and mood.
Underneath its sleek exterior, the EX30 offers customers in the US two powertrain options—the Single Motor Extended Range and the Twin Motor Performance. The former configuration comprises a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 268 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with an extended-range battery boasting a usable capacity of 64 kilowatt-hours. This setup allows the EX30 Single Motor Extended Range to offer an estimated range of 275 miles on a single charge.
The Twin Motor Performance model, on the other hand, enhances the driving experience by introducing a front electric motor for all-wheel drive capability. With a total output of 422 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of system torque, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance is Volvo’s fastest-accelerating production car ever, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4
seconds. This performance-oriented model shares the same 64-kWh battery as its single motor counterpart and offers an estimated range of approximately 265 miles.
In Europe and other markets, Volvo will also introduce an entry-level Single Motor powertrain. This setup features the same 268-horsepower rear motor but utilizes an LFP battery pack with a usable capacity of 49 kilowatt-hours. The entry-level EX30 is estimated to provide a range of around 200 miles.
Charging the NMC battery-powered variants of the EX30 is a breeze. With a DC charging peak power of 153 kilowatts, these models can achieve a 10-80 percent charging cycle in just over 26.5 minutes. The LFP battery version, on the other hand, charges at up to 134 kilowatts and completes the same cycle in 26 minutes.
Looking ahead, Volvo plans to expand the EX30 lineup by introducing a Cross Country variant in 2024. Aimed at adventure enthusiasts, this model will feature increased ground clearance, 19-inch black wheels, or 18-inch wheels with bespoke all-terrain tires. Skid plates and special black panels on the front bumper and trunk lid will enhance the rugged appearance of the EX30 Cross Country. Interested customers can place orders for this adventure-focused variant in 2024, with production expected to commence later that year.
