2024 Volkswagen ID.3 Facelift Updated Inside And Out

In a development that marks the second generation of Volkswagen’s ID family of Electric Vehicles, the German automaker has unveiled the facelifted version of its ID.3 model, two and a half years after its initial launch. Volkswagen has made bold claims about the comprehensive nature of the upgrade, despite the lack of significant changes to the car’s interior and exterior aesthetics.

Although there are some subtle alterations to the car’s appearance, the primary focus of the upgrade has been on the latest software, which incorporates new convenience and assist systems. Volkswagen claims that these changes are significant enough to warrant the description of the ID.3 as a second generation car.

From a visual perspective, the facelifted ID.3’s most notable external change is the redesigned front bumper, featuring enlarged air cooling openings that lend the vehicle a more aggressive appearance. The LED headlights and taillight clusters also sport new light signatures, with the taillight segments in the boot lid now illuminated as well. Other exterior modifications include aero-optimized alloy wheels, a black roof with matt-silver trim, and the addition of new colors like the Dark Olivine Green iridescent metallic paint. The front hood also appears longer due to the removal of the black strip under the windshield, with recessed sections at the sides that give the impression of greater length.

While the interior of the car remains largely unchanged, Volkswagen has incorporated feedback from customers to optimize the haptic experience through the use of high-quality materials. Soft, foam-backed surfaces now line the cockpit, and the door panels have been remodeled to include larger, softer surfaces and more generous hand rests. Furthermore, the ID.3 is now entirely animal-free and boasts a high proportion of recycled materials, with the Artvelours Eco microfiber material on the door trims and seat covers made from 71 percent recycled plastic waste.

The infotainment system features two free-standing displays: a compact 5.3-inch driver display and a larger 12-inch touchscreen. The latter controls the navigation system, telephone functions, media, assist systems, and vehicle settings. Volkswagen has made several changes to the menu structure of the infotainment system, including a clearer, more informative charging menu that is now located on the top level of the main display.

Under the hood, the facelifted ID.3 continues with the same rear-mounted electric drive motor, rated at 201 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of torque. The 58-kWh and 77-kWh battery packs, with the same WLTP range ratings, remain available. The larger battery provides a range of up to 339 miles in the ID.3 Pro S, while the smaller one offers 264 miles of range in the ID.3 Pro. Volkswagen has indicated that a smaller battery is planned for the future, although no details have been provided.

At a DC fast-charging station, the 77-kWh battery in the ID.3 Pro S can charge from 5 to 80 percent within 30 minutes, at a rate of up to 170 kW. The 58-kWh pack in the ID.3 Pro requires 35 minutes to complete the same charging cycle, at 120 kW.

While Volkswagen has not announced a specific date for the launch of the facelifted ID.3, earlier reports suggest that it will be available to customers in Europe from the fourth quarter of 2023. Despite the limited aesthetic changes, the automaker’s bold claims regarding the comprehensive upgrade and the incorporation of new software and assist systems make the facelifted ID.3 an exciting prospect for fans of electric vehicles.
