2024 Mercedes E-Class Estate Wagon Revealed

The largest of the three Mercedes wagons is even more substantial than its predecessor, offering an incredibly spacious interior. Internally known as the S214, its wheelbase has been extended by 0.86 inches to provide additional legroom, while the width has increased by 1.1 inches, ensuring greater elbow room.

The 2024 Mercedes E-Class, no longer equipped with an optional third row, offers 21.7 cubic feet of space with the rear seats in place, or a substantial 64.6 cubic feet when folded.

Beyond the numbers, the new E-Class Estate is an attractive wagon that possesses all the right attributes to encroach upon GLE sales. As expected, it closely resembles the W214 E-Class Sedan, which made its debut in late April and presents a less contentious appearance than the upcoming BMW 5 Series Touring. The body exhibits a sleeker design compared to its predecessor, as the drag coefficient has dropped from 0.27 to 0.26. It can be outfitted with wheels as large as 21 inches, while the base model rides on a set of 17-inch wheels.

The E-Class Estate is available with standard rear air suspension or an optional two-axle Airmatic system, guaranteeing a luxurious and comfortable ride suitable for families. All the desirable features found in the sedan are also available, including a three-screen setup, a selfie camera, and TikTok integration. In addition, it comes preloaded with Angry Birds and includes Zoom for conference calls, utilizing the same interior video camera mounted on the dashboard.

In the European market, Mercedes will initially offer the posh wagon with the E200 and E220d models, supplemented by the E300e plug-in hybrid. The gasoline variant utilizes a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine generating 204 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. This four-cylinder powertrain belongs to the mild-hybrid category, working in conjunction with an electric motor that provides an additional 23 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Together, this combination allows for a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 144 mph.

The E220d diesel variant boasts a 2.0-liter engine producing 197 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, paired with the same 48V hybrid setup. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 143 mph. Mercedes has also revealed that a six-cylinder diesel option will be introduced for those seeking more power. All versions are equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission, specifically tailored for this application to improve packaging and reduce weight.

Regarding the E300e, it combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 312 horsepower. The internal combustion engine contributes 204 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, while the electric motor delivers 129 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The E300e boasts the swiftest acceleration among the trio, achieving a 0 to 62 mph sprint in 6.5 seconds

, and a top speed of 141 mph. With the assistance of a 25.4-kWh battery pack, the electric range in the WLTP cycle exceeds 62 miles.

Mercedes has stated its intention to introduce a diesel plug-in hybrid model in the future. Naturally, there will also be AMG variants, although it remains uncertain whether the V8 engine will make a comeback. According to a recent report, the flagship E63 will transition to a V6 plug-in hybrid configuration, producing over 700 horsepower. However, no official confirmation has been provided. The E63 Estate will face renewed competition as both the Audi RS6 Avant and the BMW M5 Touring are likely to make a comeback by 2025.

Speaking of future iterations, spy shots have unveiled plans for another elevated All-Terrain model. This model has already appeared in a leaked document from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regarding 2024 model year vehicles, indicating its imminent arrival in the United States. Unless Mercedes decides to retain the previous model for an additional year, the new All-Terrain variant is on its way.

Meanwhile, the regular Mercedes E-Class Estate is set to go on sale this autumn in Europe, offering a compelling option for those seeking versatility and sophistication.
