2023 Nio EL7 Crash Test and Safety

Euro NCAP’s rating programme continues to play a crucial role in driving ongoing safety enhancements in passenger vehicles. As technology and society progress, Euro NCAP adapts its rating requirements to reflect these advancements. In 2023, the safety testing protocol has undergone updates, encompassing new systems for child presence detection, specifications for vehicle submergence, and the latest technologies for detecting and responding to motorcyclists and vulnerable road users. Manufacturers aiming to attain Euro NCAP’s prestigious five-star rating must now meet the stringent targets outlined in this revised test protocol. Today, EuroNCAP announces that two cars from Chinese automaker NIO, which are new to the European market, have achieved the coveted five-star rating: the Large Family car ET5 and the Large SUV EL7.

To secure a high Euro NCAP safety rating, a vehicle’s passive safety, active safety, and post-crash rescue information must all be comprehensive. Passive safety refers to a vehicle’s ability to protect occupants and vulnerable users during a crash, while active safety aims to prevent or minimize the consequences of a collision. Both the ET5 and EL7 from NIO exhibit commendable levels of passive safety, ensuring the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger, as well as occupants of varying sizes and positions within the car, receive adequate protection.

In 2023, the NIO ET5 and EL7 became the first vehicles to undergo Euro NCAP’s brand-new Active Safety scenarios. These scenarios include Car-to-Motorcycle, Car-to-Car Crossing, Car-to-Car Head-on, Dooring, and Driver State Monitoring. Both vehicles delivered exceptional performance across most of the test cases, showcasing the remarkable progress that Active Safety technology has made over the years in avoiding increasingly complex crash types. However, their performance in some of the more demanding scenarios, such as Car-to-Car Crossing at higher speeds, revealed areas that still require improvement. The 2023 scenarios set a high benchmark for the future, urging further advancements in vehicle safety.

Additionally, both the ET5 and EL7 are equipped with an advanced eCall system, which promptly notifies emergency services in the event of a crash. Furthermore, these vehicles feature a system that automatically applies the brakes after an impact to prevent secondary collisions. NIO has also demonstrated that if either vehicle were to enter the water, the doors and windows would remain operational long enough for the occupants to escape safely.
