Porsche 911 GT3 R Rennsport Revealed

Rennsport Reunion 7, currently underway in sunny California, serves as Porsche’s grand celebration of its storied racing history. Amidst the high-octane festivities, Porsche has unveiled a truly exceptional automobile – the Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport. This beast of a machine, however, stands apart from the typical street-legal and GT3 competition cars we’re accustomed to.

First things first, Porsche has dubbed this creation the 911 GT3 R rennsport, with a lowercase ‘R’ – a stark contrast to the car’s bold and unapologetically uppercase presence. Beneath its attention-grabbing, larger-than-life rear wing, which necessitates extra support to handle its prodigious downforce, lies a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter flat-six engine. Borrowed from the GT3 race car, this powerhouse generates an impressive 611 horsepower. What’s intriguing is that it isn’t bound by GT3-class regulations, allowing it to breathe more freely. The engine receives special tuning to run on E25 fuel and boasts bespoke pistons and camshafts. With a higher compression ratio, it’s bound to produce a spine-tingling symphony as it revs to an astonishing 9,400 RPM.

As evident in the photo gallery, the GT3 R rennsport is poised to make its presence known from miles away. Porsche’s decision to forgo many of the conventional panels and covers in favor of a weight-saving approach leaves much of the mechanical underpinnings on display. This includes the exhaust system, which can be configured for fully unrestricted noise or equipped with mufflers and catalytic converters to comply with track noise regulations. Power is channeled exclusively to the rear wheels via the six-speed sequential gearbox, a modified version of the GT3 R’s transmission.

Turning our attention to the wheels, the GT3 R rennsport features special 18-inch rims from BBS, wrapped in Michelin tires crafted specifically for this exceptional machine. The chassis and suspension setup are lifted directly from the racing GT3, though Porsche has tailored a unique setup for the rennsport right at the factory.

The most striking aspect of this vehicle is its bodywork. Porsche reveals that only the hood and roof are shared with the GT3 R. The front end, taking inspiration from the racetrack, presents a radical interpretation, characterized by redesigned vents, panels, and fins. Instead of traditional side mirrors, the rennsport employs cameras that feed visuals to a dedicated cockpit display. Notably, the rear wing design draws inspiration from the iconic 935/77, solidifying the 911 GT3 R rennsport’s status as a spiritual successor to the 935.

Porsche has grand plans for this remarkable creation, seeing it as not only a high-performance marvel but also a coveted collector’s item. To cater to individual tastes, Porsche offers seven distinct color options and three exterior designs for prospective buyers.

However, those desiring to add one of these limited-edition 911s to their collection will need to act swiftly and be prepared to open their wallets wide. Porsche plans to produce just 77 units of the GT3 R rennsport, with prices commencing at a substantial $1,046,000.
