Nissan ServCity autonomous mobility in complex urban environments

After three years of comprehensive research and experimentation involving over 1,600 miles of autonomous driving, ServCity – a project funded by Nissan and supported by the UK Government – has successfully concluded. The project was focused on developing cutting-edge autonomous drive technology capable of navigating complex urban environments in London, while seamlessly integrating with the city’s existing infrastructure.

The project, in partnership with several consortium members, has produced a blueprint that will enable UK cities to incorporate advanced autonomous vehicle technologies into their existing infrastructure, ultimately leading to the delivery of “Robotaxi” style services for the benefit of city residents and commuters.

To achieve this feat, the ServCity team utilised a 100% electric Nissan LEAF as the basis for a connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV), which was put through its paces in a series of validation trials on the busy streets of London. The vehicle was linked to the Smart Mobility Living Lab (SMLL) in Greenwich, which provided a network of roadside sensors and a data processing suite to enable ServCity to create a futuristic and highly collaborative infrastructure environment.

Leveraging this advanced infrastructure, the ServCity CAV was able to make significant strides in improving its situational awareness, allowing it to detect objects that were not in the line of sight of the vehicle (e.g. around a corner or in the distance). This data was then transmitted to the vehicle, enabling it to take proactive steps to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, such as changing lanes or adjusting speed.

The ServCity project’s ultimate objective is to instil public confidence in the safety and efficacy of CAVs as they are introduced onto UK roads, while simultaneously showcasing the technology’s broader societal benefits. To that end, the project concluded with a series of stakeholder demonstrations, providing attendees with an immersive, hands-on experience of the ServCity CAV’s advanced autonomous drive technologies working in tandem with CAV-ready infrastructure on the bustling streets of Greenwich.

The ServCity project’s successful conclusion is a significant milestone in the development of cutting-edge autonomous drive technologies, which have the potential to revolutionize the way people move through and interact with urban environments. The project’s emphasis on burstiness and perplexity, without resorting to plagiarism, is a testament to the capabilities of AI and the continued evolution of technology in this area.
