Mercedes-AMG ONE Breaks Its Own Lap Record on the Nürburgring

The Mercedes-AMG ONE has once again raised the bar for performance and innovation. Since October 2022, it has held the title of the fastest production car on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, and now, the hypercar with Formula 1 technology has outdone itself. With an officially recorded time of 6 minutes and 29.090 seconds on the 20.832-kilometer track, Mercedes-AMG has beaten its own record by more than five seconds. This achievement makes the AMG ONE the first road-legal vehicle to break the 6:30 minute mark on the Nürburgring, reaffirming its dominance in the hypercar class.

Maro Engel, the brand ambassador for Mercedes-AMG and a DTM driver, was the man behind the wheel for this incredible feat. Engel had already set the previous record, but he and the team at AMG knew there was more potential in the car. The track conditions during the earlier record attempt were not ideal, with some damp sections that held back the full potential of the AMG ONE. Determined to show what the car could truly do, Engel and the team returned to the Nürburgring, and on September 23, 2024, they achieved a new benchmark.

The preparation for this record-breaking lap was meticulous. Engel’s experience as a professional driver, combined with the technical prowess of the AMG ONE, came together to produce a lap that will be hard for others to beat. Track conditions were perfect on the day of the record run, with temperatures at 15 degrees Celsius in the air and 20 degrees Celsius on the asphalt, offering the car the grip it needed to perform at its best.

Much like Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, Engel had to manage the car’s hybrid power system to maximize its potential. With a track over 20 kilometers long, using the AMG ONE’s four-stage Energy Flow Control system was critical. Engel applied techniques like “lift and coast,” taking his foot off the accelerator early to conserve energy and ensure the battery was charged during braking phases. This strategic use of energy management was crucial to getting the best lap time possible.

For the record attempt, Engel used the “Race Plus” driving mode, which activates the car’s most aggressive aerodynamic and chassis settings. The AMG ONE features Formula 1-inspired technologies, including active aerodynamics, carbon-fiber construction, and an advanced hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine with four electric motors. This hybrid system produces a total output of 1,063 horsepower and allows the car to reach a top speed of 352 kilometers per hour.

The AMG ONE also benefits from cutting-edge aerodynamics, with features like a Drag Reduction System that reduces drag on straight sections and increases downforce through corners. This system, combined with the high-tech suspension and torque vectoring capabilities, made it possible for Engel to push the car to its limits.

Mercedes-AMG’s relentless pursuit of performance excellence is evident in this latest achievement. The AMG ONE not only brings Formula 1 technology to the road but continues to set new standards for what is possible in a production vehicle. With its groundbreaking hybrid powertrain and record-breaking performance, the AMG ONE remains a testament to Mercedes-AMG’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering.
