’75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars’: A Celebration of Automotive Excellence

Over the weekend, car enthusiasts gathered at Lake Como to immerse themselves in a rich display of car culture. The event, organized by Guglielmo Miani, marked the fourth edition of a series that aims to celebrate the most captivating elements of motorcar culture. This gathering, known as the ‘Fuori Concorso Open Museum,’ coincided with the prestigious ‘Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este’ held annually in May at the splendid Grumello and Sucota villas. Since 2022, the exhibition expanded its reach to include the esteemed Villa Olmo, an exquisite location overlooking Lake Como. This year’s exhibition was dedicated to commemorating the 75th anniversary of Porsche, the renowned sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart.

The expansive gardens of Villa Olmo housed a remarkable display of forty of Porsche’s most iconic and successful models, open for public viewing as part of the ‘Fuori Concorso’ experience, just a short stroll away from Como’s city center. Visitors had the opportunity to appreciate the evolution of Porsche’s design and engineering prowess.

Achim Stejskal, Head of Porsche Heritage and Museum at Porsche AG, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “The incredible atmosphere offers the ideal setting in which to present exceptional cars from the past 75 years to fans, but also to those people who, with their dreams and courage, played their part in writing the success story of our brand.”

Despite the occasionally high humidity, international visitors eagerly explored the exhibition, captivated by the captivating tales told by each exhibit. The journey through time began with the Porsche 550 Spyder, which secured victory in its class at the illustrious Carrera Panamericana race in 1954. Another notable car, the Porsche 356 B 2000 GS Carrera GT from 1963, showcased its unique design crafted by F.A. Porsche and its impressive weight reduction compared to its road-legal counterpart.

The exhibition also featured a range of Porsche’s triumphs in motorsport, including the Porsche 804 Formula 1, which achieved an extraordinary milestone in 1962 by securing Porsche’s first and only World Championship victory in Formula 1.

One of the standout attractions was the Porsche 917/30 Spyder, a remarkable sports car designed for the CanAm series in 1972. This vehicle boasted adjustable wheelbase, providing a glimpse into Porsche’s innovation and engineering expertise. Additionally, the concept car known as the ‘Group B’ was showcased. Initially revealed in 1985 as a homologation model, it eventually became the iconic Porsche 959.

The exhibition also paid tribute to the timeless Porsche 911, displaying various iterations throughout its history. Notable models included the ancestral 356 A 1600 Speedster, the contemporary 911 2.2 S Targa and 911 (964)

Carrera RS, and the latest addition to the 911 family, the 911 Dakar—a sports car that pushes the boundaries of the Porsche 911 concept with its increased ground clearance.

To enrich the exhibition further, passionate Porsche owners proudly displayed their own prized vehicles. These additions included a 911 R from the 991 generation, a 911 GT2 RS Clubsport from Manthey-Racing, and Paolo Barilla’s 911 GT3 from the 992 generation. Porsche Italy also contributed to the ‘Fuori Concorso’ by showcasing models such as the 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS, and the timeless 911 Carrera RS 2.7 from 1973. Additionally, a 356 Speedster from 1956 added a touch of classic elegance to the lakeside event.

Beyond the cars themselves, the exhibition emphasized the profound impact that people have on the Porsche brand. During the ‘Dreamers Talk’ event, Porsche representatives and enthusiasts shared personal stories of their connections to the Stuttgart marque. From childhood dreams to personal achievements, each individual showcased their unwavering passion for Porsche. Their narratives served as a testament to the enduring legacy and inspiration that the brand instills in its devotees.

In summary, the ‘Fuori Concorso Open Museum’ at Lake Como was a resounding success, offering visitors a captivating glimpse into the remarkable history of Porsche sports cars. With an extensive collection of iconic models and the personal anecdotes of Porsche enthusiasts, the exhibition beautifully demonstrated the brand’s continuous pursuit of automotive excellence. As Porsche looks towards the future, it will undoubtedly build upon its rich heritage to shape the next chapter of sports car innovation and craftsmanship.
