Ford EV Customers Will Be Able To Use Tesla Charging Ports

Ford Motor Company announced today that it has reached a groundbreaking agreement with Tesla Motors, enabling Ford’s electric vehicle (EV) customers to utilize Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, comprising more than 12,000 charging stations across the United States and Canada. This collaboration effectively doubles the number of fast-chargers accessible to Ford EV customers, starting from Spring 2024.

According to Jim Farley, Ford’s president and CEO, this partnership signifies a remarkable milestone for Ford customers, providing them with unparalleled access to the most expansive fast-charging network in North America. With over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers and an additional 10,000 fast-chargers already available through the BlueOval Charge Network, widespread access to fast-charging is deemed critical to Ford’s EV brand growth. The agreement arrives at a crucial time as Ford gears up production for its popular models, the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, while also preparing for the launch of next-generation EVs in 2025.

Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s senior director of charging infrastructure, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration. Tesla has dedicated the past decade to building an industry-leading Charging Network, fostering travel freedom and charging confidence for Tesla owners. By extending access to thousands of Superchargers to Ford owners and other EVs adopting the NACS (National Automotive Charging Standard), Tesla aims to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

To facilitate the integration, Ford vehicles equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) port, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and E-Transit, will utilize a Tesla-developed adapter to access Tesla’s V3 Superchargers. However, starting in 2025, Ford will equip its future EVs with the NACS charge port, eliminating the need for an adapter and allowing direct access to Tesla Superchargers.

Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer of Ford Model e, commended Tesla’s leadership in establishing a robust and efficient charging system. The partnership between Ford and Tesla ensures that customers benefit from a superior experience. Tesla’s Supercharger network boasts excellent reliability, while Ford’s NACS plug is smaller and lighter, enhancing convenience for EV owners.

Ford’s BlueOval Charge Network, currently the largest public charging network in North America, already encompasses over 84,000 chargers, including access to more than 10,000 public DC fast-chargers. With the addition of Tesla’s 12,000 Superchargers, this collaboration creates the most extensive integrated fast-charge network across the United States and Canada. The unified network aims to alleviate charge anxiety among Ford customers, providing automatic routing to the nearest charger and seamless billing through the FordPass platform.

Furthermore, Ford dealerships plan to introduce approximately 1,800 public-facing fast-chargers and locations to the BlueOval Charge Network by early 2024. This commitment further reinforces Ford’s dedication to enhancing the charging infrastructure and promoting widespread EV adoption.
