Comparison of 2023 Ford F 150 Raptor R and 2022 Ram 1500 TRX

The pickup truck has undergone a significant transformation over the past 13 years, with Ford and Ram constantly pushing each other to create even better and more advanced vehicles. This competition has resulted in the creation of street-legal extreme off-roaders with sport-sedan acceleration.

The Ram 1500 TRX and the Ford F-150 Raptor R are almost identical in concept, as they both feature supercharged V-8 engines. The TRX has a 702 horsepower engine, while the Raptor R has 700 horsepower. Both trucks also have 13 and 14 inches of front and rear suspension travel, making them capable of bounding over rough terrain and crawling up steep trails. However, the Raptor R is more expensive, with a starting price of $109,145 compared to the TRX’s starting price of $85,785.

In order to determine the differences between the two trucks, a comparison test was conducted at a Michigan test track and then in their natural habitat. On winding trails with loose sand and slick snow, the Baja mode was activated and the trucks were pushed to their limits.

The Ford Raptor R is powered by the Predator engine, which is originally designed for the Mustang Shelby GT500. The engine trades power for torque, but the 60 horsepower difference is not noticeable. The 5.2-liter V-8 revs to a high redline of 7,000 R P M, and acceleration is intense and instant. The Raptor R can reach 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and complete a quarter mile in 12.1 seconds at 111.8 mph. The power delivery is so linear and unrelenting that it feels like a pair of electric motors.

The Ram TRX is powered by a Hellcat 6.2-liter V-8 engine, which is louder and more aggressive than the Raptor R’s engine. The engine’s supercharger produces a high-pitched wail that dominates the engine noise inside the cabin. However, from outside the truck, the twin exhaust cannons produce a powerful boom. The TRX is slower than the Raptor R, reaching 60 mph 0.2 seconds later, with the gap widening through the quarter mile. The TRX builds momentum gradually, but once it is rolling, it delivers a towering amount of torque.

The Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission has two more gears than the Ram’s transmission, which can make it feel like it is shifting more often. However, the gear changes are fast and assertive, and the shift logic is sound. The Raptor is more eager to downshift, while the TRX is content to hold a gear and dig from lower RPM at part throttle.

The Raptor R allows you to switch between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, which is not possible with the TRX. The Raptor defaults to two-wheel drive in its Normal mode and is perfect for flinging dirt and tire smoke.
