2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Revealed

The Volkswagen Atlas is back with a vengeance for the 2024 model year, sporting a bold new look and an array of upgraded features. At the Chicago Auto Show, the three-row Atlas and its two-row sibling, the Atlas Cross, are making their grand debut, revealing the full extent of their updates.

Visually, the Atlas is a complete departure from its previous iteration. The front end is dominated by a striking LED headlight design that wraps around the bold new mesh grille, now finished in black instead of the faux chrome accents of last year’s model. A captivating light bar stretches across the hood, connecting to the headlights and drawing attention to the illuminated VW logo.

The rear of the Atlas has received an update as well, featuring a larger roof spoiler and a bold light bar that spans the width of the trunk lid. This new lighting fixture is included in all versions of the Atlas and Atlas Cross, except the base trim, which makes do with traditional taillights.

One of the most exciting changes for the 2024 Atlas is the new wheel design, which comes in sizes ranging from 18 to 20 inches, with the sporty R-Line trim opting for 21-inch aluminum alloys. The R-Line trim also features unique badging and gloss black accents that add to the vehicle’s distinctive look.

The interior of the Atlas has been refined as well, with higher-quality leatherette now used for the dash and center console, as well as the door panels. The top-trim models feature quilted leather seats with a diamond stitching pattern, elevating the overall feel of the cabin. A 12.0-inch “floating” touchscreen takes the place of the 10.3-inch unit from last year, and a new 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster is positioned in front of the driver.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard on all models, and the refreshed cabin is equipped with wireless charging and six USB-C ports, as well as two USB-A ports, ensuring everyone can stay charged on the go.

In terms of safety, the VW IQ.Drive driver assistance technology is now standard on all models, including lane centering, lane-keep assist, and automatic braking. Adaptive cruise control and a head-up display are still offered as optional add-ons.

Perhaps the most significant change to the 2024 Atlas is the powertrain. The previous VR6 engine option has been retired, making way for a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, while still maintaining a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. The only transmission available is an eight-speed automatic, with front-wheel drive as standard and 4Motion all-wheel drive offered as an option.

The 2024 Atlas is set to hit dealerships later this year, and Volkswagen will announce pricing details closer to the on-sale date. Although a slight increase over the 2023 model, which starts at $36,445 with the destination fee included, is expected, the Atlas is poised to offer a truly elevated driving experience.
