2024 Renault Clio Debuts Major Facelift Engines and Features Explained

A little over four years ago, Renault revealed its fifth-generation Clio, and today, the automaker is unveiling a significant mid-cycle refresh to keep the supermini competitive in a segment that includes rivals like the Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia, and SEAT Ibiza trio. This substantial update brings a completely reimagined front end with sleeker headlights and an expansive grille sporting a distinctive checkerboard motif.

In terms of powertrain options, the lineup offers familiar choices, commencing with a 1.0-liter, naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine that generates 65 horsepower and 70 pound-feet of torque, channeled to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. Next in line is a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder variant, producing 90 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Clio E-Tech Full Hybrid 145 stands as the flagship powertrain, marrying a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine to twin electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack with a 1.2-kWh capacity. Boasting a combined output of 145 hp, power is transmitted through a clutchless gearbox that offers two speeds for EV mode and four when the combustion engine is engaged.

Interestingly, Renault also offers a revised Clio with a compressed natural gas-powered three-cylinder turbo engine, capable of covering over 621 miles while generating 125 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm and emitting eight percent less CO2 compared to its gasoline-only counterpart.

Contrary to expectations, diesel remains an option for the 2024 Clio with the Blue dCi 100 unit, featuring a familiar 1.5-liter mill that delivers 100 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

The redesigned bumper houses daytime running lights shaped like half of an upright rhombus, giving a nod to the Renault logo, which is finished in brushed chrome. The French automaker is also attempting to revive the popularity of clear taillights. Additionally, the diffuser offers six different designs, depending on the trim level and hybrid status. The Esprit Alpine, a new flagship trim replacing the RS Line, is shown here.

Customers can choose from five wheel designs up to 17 inches in diameter, all sporting the latest corporate logo in brushed aluminum. Opting for the Esprit Alpine or Techno trim adds a shark fin antenna. Paint selections include Arctic White, Platinum Gray, Black Pearl Black, Iron Blue, Decir Red, Valencia Orange, and the new tri-coat Rafal Gray.

While the interior remains mostly unchanged, new sustainable materials are incorporated throughout the cabin. In fact, leather upholstery is not an option for the 2024 Clio. Instead, seats are covered in TEP, a material derived from organic and polyester fibers. The Esprit Alpine trim provides sportier front seats with enhanced lateral support.

On the technology front, the digital instrument cluster is offered in 7- and 10-inch sizes, while the touchscreen comes in 7- or 9.3-inch configurations. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported, as well as built-in navigation, a 360-degree camera, and a suite of 20 driver assistance systems. Key features include adaptive cruise control (with stop & go) and Level 2 partially automated driving capabilities.

Lastly, it is worth noting that the Clio will no longer compete with the Ford Fiesta, as the Blue Oval has chosen to discontinue its B-segment hatchback.
