The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has been revealed as the automaker’s most powerful production vehicle to date, boasting a maximum of 340 horsepower. This is achieved through the combination of a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine and a mild hybrid system, which incorporates a small electric motor between the engine and transmission. The inline-six engine delivers 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, while the hybrid system provides additional power and allows the CX-90 to move at slow speeds without relying solely on the I6 engine.

For those who want a higher degree of electric propulsion, Mazda is offering a PHEV e-Skyactiv powertrain option. This system features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor that generates a combined 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. A 17.8-kWh battery feeds the electric motor, enabling the CX-90 to travel longer distances on electric power alone. Although Mazda hasn’t yet announced the official electric range of the CX-90, it is likely to be similar to the CX-60, which has an all-electric range of around 39 miles.

One aspect of the CX-90 that remains constant regardless of the engine choice is the standard all-wheel drive and the new eight-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the traditional torque converter. Mazda claims that the electrification improves power delivery, making it smoother and more direct, although the automaker has not yet released figures for acceleration or top speed.

The CX-90 has a touch of the MX-5 Miata in its underpinnings, incorporating Kinematic Posture Control, which debuted on the 2022 Miata. This system applies slight brake pressure to the inside rear wheel during cornering, helping to suppress body roll and provide a linear feel to the steering.

In terms of interior design, the CX-90 boasts a luxurious cabin that blends modern luxury with traditional Japanese aesthetics. The 12.3-inch center infotainment screen sits atop the dash, complemented by tactile controls for operating various features such as the seats and climate control. A driver’s display screen is also available, and options like third-row air conditioning and USB-C charging ports can be added, depending on the chosen configuration.

At this time, there are still several details about the 2024 Mazda CX-90 that have not been announced, including performance, economy, interior space, price, and production. More information is expected to be released in the coming weeks as the CX-90’s on-sale date approaches.
