2023 Genesis Electrified G80 in White

The future of driving is rapidly approaching, and it’s time to embrace a new era of rechargeable cars. Electric vehicles (EVs) offer unparalleled efficiency and the freedom to explore designs and features previously unattainable with traditional internal combustion engines. However, transitioning to electric vehicles requires drivers to adapt to a new way of getting from point A to point B. It’s a lot to take in, but the 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 aims to make this transition smoother and more accessible.

Genesis, the luxury brand known for its innovative vehicles, introduces its first EV in the form of the Electrified G80. Although the brand had previously released the GV60 electric crossover, the Electrified G80 represents a significant step towards making EVs more familiar and approachable. However, it’s worth noting that other EVs are already making their way onto the market, including within Genesis’ own lineup.

Built on the foundation of the latest G80 model released in 2021, the Genesis Electrified G80 seamlessly incorporates electric powertrain technology into a sedan that retains the luxurious features and design elements of its non-electric counterpart. From the outside, the Electrified G80 may not immediately stand out as an EV, as it maintains the sleek and captivating appearance of the standard G80. Subtle modifications, such as reshaped bumpers and a concealed charge port behind the closed-off grille, distinguish it as an electric vehicle.

Step inside the cabin, and you’ll be greeted with a striking contrast of white leather upholstery against dark green surfaces. The interior materials, including the carpet and microsuede headliner, are crafted from recycled plastics. Unique forged wood trim repurposes remnants from furniture manufacturing, adding an element of exclusivity to the cabin. The 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, 3-D digital gauge display, and glass shift knob are all eye-catching features that enhance the overall experience.

In terms of configuration, the G80 Electric comes fully loaded with all available options, priced at $80,920. Additionally, the purchase includes three years of 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America stations, providing added convenience and peace of mind.

What truly sets the Electrified G80 apart is its powertrain. Instead of the traditional turbocharged I-4 or V-6 engines found in conventional G80 models, the electric version boasts an 87.2-kWh battery and dual motors that generate an impressive 365 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. While the horsepower is slightly lower than the V-6-powered G80, the torque is significantly higher.

The immediate availability of torque enables the electric G80 to accelerate with astonishing speed. It effortlessly reaches 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds and completes the quarter mile in 12.8 seconds at 106.1 mph. These figures clearly outshine the performance of the next-quickest G80 variant, showcasing the electric model’s exceptional power. However, in terms of handling and grip, the G80 Sport with summer performance tires outperforms the all-season-tire-equipped EV. Despite this, the Electrified G80 impressively surpasses the non-Sport G80 models, even though it carries additional weight.

On the road, the G80 EV exhibits a composed and serene demeanor, reminiscent of classic cruisers. The power delivery is smooth and refined, surpassing the performance of traditional engines. The cabin remains blissfully quiet, thanks to features like laminated glass and active noise cancellation technology.

While the G80 EV excels in various aspects, there are certain aspects that might not convince everyone to fully embrace the electric revolution. For instance, the seating position is slightly raised due to the underfloor battery, resulting in reduced headroom throughout the cabin.

Additionally, the exterior dimensions remain unchanged, leading to a decrease in second-row legroom and a compromise in cargo space. The placement of the charge port within the grille, while aesthetically pleasing, can pose challenges when accessing public charging stations. Furthermore, the regenerative deceleration effect, which eliminates the need for excessive braking, is not as seamless in the Electrified G80 as in other dedicated EVs.

In conclusion, the Genesis Electrified G80 is an enticing option for those seeking a luxurious and powerful electric sedan. It maintains the elegance and quality synonymous with the Genesis brand, offering a range of advanced features. However, as the automotive industry continues to evolve, it’s evident that Genesis has even more remarkable electric vehicles in store.
