2023 BMW Z4 Modestly Update Keeps Roadster Desirable

BMW deserves commendation for its commitment to producing roadsters, despite the fact that the market for such vehicles has been shrinking continuously. Nevertheless, a few convertibles, including the BMW Z4, are still available. This car has undergone its third model generation (or fourth, if the Z3 is included), which began just two years ago. However, surprisingly, the Z4 is already set for an update, which is more of a streamlining than a mid-cycle refresh, at least that’s what we hope.

While the Z4 is available in other markets as the sDrive 20i, which features an entry-level 2.0-liter four and a six-speed manual that generates 194-horsepower, the U.S. version starts with a more powerful version of the same four-cylinder engine, known as the sDrive 30i, which produces 255-horsepower. The range is topped off by a straight-six M40i, which generates 382-horsepower. Both engines are paired with the ubiquitous ZF-sourced 8HP torque-converter-type automatic.

The press release for the updated Z4 declares that the formerly optional M Sport body trim, which was standard on the M40i, is now standard equipment on the sDrive 30i as well, as part of an effort to achieve a “new maximum of sportiness.”

The new model year will launch in November, with the sDrive 30i and M40i models starting at $53,795 and $66,295, respectively. The latter is only a couple of hundred dollars more expensive than the 2022 model. It is great to see the Z4 persisting, and we hope it continues to do so for many years to come.
