2022 VW Golf R Volkswagen

The all-new Golf R continues to evolve a legacy of understated performance first pioneered for the 2004 model year, with the introduction of the rally-inspired Golf R32. Almost two decades later, the fifth iteration of Volkswagen’s performance halo ups the ante with new race-inspired content and premium features.

With its 315-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection EA888 evo4 TSI® engine, the all-new Golf R brings a 27-horsepower advantage over its predecessor. In a nod to enthusiasts, Golf R is available with a standard manual six-speed transmission or an optional seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic. A new vehicle dynamics system made its debut in Mk8 Golf family. On Golf R, this controls the XDS® electronic differential lock, and the lateral dynamics of the standard DCC® adaptive damping system.

In 2022, rear-axle torque vectoring brings an entirely different level of handling to the Golf R. Using a rear differential with two multi-plate clutches, it can distribute up to 100 percent of the rear torque to an individual rear wheel to maximize cornering grip. The system even enables the new track-only “Drift” mode, for use away from public roads, which sends all available rear torque to the outside wheel. The Golf R also has a new “Special” setting, configured for highest performance around Germany’s famed Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack, with torque vectoring optimized for the track’s cornering profile, along with softer suspension damper settings.

The new Golf R is longer and sportier than its predecessor, and features an entirely new electronic architecture. The evolved exterior design bears the styling hallmarks of past Golf R models, such as the blue-painted brake calipers and distinctive C-pillar, while adding a more sharply raked hood, a new blue strip in the grille (akin to the signature red strip on GTI), new lighting and wheel design, and a performance spoiler. Inside, a new, digitally-networked world of displays and controls enables the driver to customize the look and technology of their Golf R more intuitively, and in greater detail, than ever before.

Built in Wolfsburg, Germany, the Golf R is sold fully loaded at an MSRP of $43,645 for the manual transmission and $44,445 for the DSG® dual-clutch automatic. Destination for all Golf R models is $995.
